I do I speed everyday for both pleasure and work the rascal that I am.
On the way to work I always end up doing 75ish in the one stretch of national speed limit road I drive on and once I am at work I regularly drive at 50 plus when I should be driving at 40

Now one of those horrid despicable( oh god think of the children) law breaking speeds im sure il be applauded for and the other il be roundly castigated as a scourge upon the earth who should be stoned to death several times.

so why is it considered relatively good for me to speed while driving an ungainly hgv yet if I do it in my nice nimble safe car im a bad bad boy?

No never. Always stick to 15 in the new 20 limits in town just to be careful.

I'm with you all the way OP. I drive safely, with good observation and in a well maintained car. I exceed most speed limits all day, every day. Not by much (most of the time). I stand by my driving and insurance record.

Most Speed Limits appear to be set at the 85% percentile then rounded down.

Not trolling, straight up. I decide what is my best speed to ensure my own safety and other road users (and to avoid prosecution). BRAKE, Safety Partnerships etc. can flog off.

Speeding in a hgv is even worse. In the weather today, hgvs were still driving 10 feet off the bumper of cars on the M6. Madness. The new over gantry speed limits seem to be optional for many drivers. Maybe the cameras on them haven't caught many yet?

I do, but pick my opportunities when it is safe to do so and I'm not likely to get caught. Speed in itself does not worry me - I've been a passenger in some cars being driven at very naughty speeds and felt safe, because the driver knew what they were doing and made sensible allowances for visibility and the road conditions; conversely I've felt petrified at half the speed with some 'slow' drivers who have bugger all awareness of what is happening around them and any developing hazards. I think a lot of the people who say they never speed are probably also some of the least capable of driving a car safely, or even know what actually constitutes safe or unsafe driving.

Crikey that's more than twice the speed limit!

At the risk of interrupting the circle jerk before it becomes a tornado of self congratulatory jizm, what other laws do people ignore on a daily basis?

Plenty probably. Let's be honest there are more "laws" on the books then any normal person has a hope of remembering let alone complying with them all.

I try to live by the law of not causing harm or loss to anybody. That pretty much covers the bases as far as I'm concerned smile

Exceeding an arbitory number on a stick as far as I can work out isn't causing harm or loss to anybody so I'll stick with doing what speed I feel is appropriate for the conditions.

Well if they aren't going to use SI units they should clarify it on the signs, your honour

Could be a parrot?

I've had a clean license for about 28 years so obviously I never speed*.

I don't see why you think it is considered good for you to speed in a HGV confused

Myself, I never speed in town, 30/40 limits in built up areas, just don't do it and frequently have impatient tts sitting on my bumper, but that is fine, they can sit there or overtake, that is their choice.

Out of town I tend to cruise at speed limit + 10% with an occasional bit of spirited driving where I assess it safe to do so. However if caught, and I have been, I don't bleat about it.

I more or less avoid speed limits and drive at a speed which I feel appropriate for the conditions and circumstances- sometimes faster, sometimes slower than the limit.

Yep, regularly. Almost every road everyday. Not by much most of the time. Sometimes if conditions allow, by lots.

Most speed limits out of town are in place due to hysteria and not solid consideration of facts and conditions.

For the record, I think people that stop before joining an empty roundabout should get the 3 points.

I drive at whatever speed I deem appropriate.

I cruised to and from Swansea from Kent over the weekend with the CC set to 96 (no major difference to economy vs 80 in the 540i) and regularly sit at 70+ in the recently reclassified old NSL roads - Orpington bypass especially as its dead straight.

I commute to work before 6am every day on a 125cc bike and as such drive to the conditions, yesterday and today 30ish and in the dry it may be 50 odd

I don't get people's fascination with a number on a stick, just got to rely on spitting the police before they spot you and knowing where cameras are (and like to be).

In all my time I've only got one speeding ticket - 78mph on the M25...
