Erroneous speeding letter from Speedwatch Scheme
Discussion
I have received a letter from Ibstone Speedwatch advising me that my Monaro was seen driving in excess of 30mph on 10/10/14 on Ibstone Road, Ibstone and that details have been noted by Thames Valley Police for future reference (my paraphrasing).
At the date and time mentioned my car was, without question, in my driveway, approx. 200 miles north of Ibstone. My wife and I were attending a family event together in her car and nobody else would or could have been driving the Monaro.
My first thoughts are that the Speedwatch operative has recorded the registration number incorrectly, thus obtaining my car details, name and address instead of those of the perpetrator.
Other possibility is that there is a vehicle out there on a cloned registration and this may only be the first instance of potential problems ahead...
I intend to contact the postal and email addresses supplied stating the above facts, but just wondering if there is anything else I should do to help avoid or deal with any future issues if there is a cloned reg. out there??
Thanks
Mark

I had a similar letter from surrey Police alleging I had entered a 'restricted' road about 150 miles from where I live. I wrote back to the Police Officer who had sent the letter, with a copy to the CC, saying I had independent witnesses that could confirm where my car was on the alleged date/time.
I received a phone call from the Officer apologising and saying there had been a mistake with the VRN.

Tell plod to buy new specs for the old farts.
Or tell them you were very very drunk at the time and remember absolutely nothing of the incident, but you must have been going much, much faster than that.
Edit....
And tell them to get on with stitching Cliff Richard up before his threatened comeback tour.

Even if they can see the VRM properly that won't be any good if their brain can't remember it when the time comes to write it down. Or their handwriting is so bad the BiB can't interpret it correctly.sometimes they do get the reg wrong, if they disagree at the time, they discard it, if it comes back too often as bogus or incorrect then the BiB have a word about who is doing it and eyesight etc.
IIRC they have to have at least 3 people there to make sure everyone is on the same page.

I wouldn't jump the gun with regards to cloning yet.
When someone actually looks at the photo of the car, they'll most likely find that it's something like a white van and they've read the reg no a letter out.
Not quite got the hang of this hand held speed gun business yet have we ?When someone actually looks at the photo of the car, they'll most likely find that it's something like a white van and they've read the reg no a letter out.

I doubt there is any photo, just a handwritten VRN on a piece of paperWhen someone actually looks at the photo of the car, they'll most likely find that it's something like a white van and they've read the reg no a letter out.

I don't think the Speedwatch teams take photos. They just have one person with the speed gun and a couple of others noting VRM's so it's most likely an incorrect recording of the VRM that's to blame.
Some time back I was passing through a local village that has a Speedwatch team. They have a favourite site that faces a long straight coming in to the village. I was approaching from the opposite direction around a sharp 90 degree bend barely 100 yds to where the Speedwatch team were stood. One of them started noting my number even though the guy with the speed gun was facing the other way. I decided to stop and enquire why this lady had noted my number. The reply was that if when I passed them I speeded leaving the village they would already have an accurate note of my number.
I did point out to them that if, after passing a group of four people wearing high-vis jackets, holding clipboards and a speed gun, I did choose to exceed the speed limit I should probably have my licence rescinded!

You mean one who can read, one who can write and one to look after the two intellectuals ?Marvib said:

Nowt but a posers car
yes but I was so busy posing I forgot to take the car!!Nowt but a posers car
Thanks for the assorted comments chaps.
I'll just advise them of the facts, request that they remove my details from their database and ask them to be a little more careful in their future record keeping!
Hopefully that'll be an end to it.
