Force recruiting extra officers

Durham Police is resuming its recruitment with up to 60 new officers set to be taken on.

The force had previously had a recruitment freeze, which it blamed on financial constraints.

The new recruitment drive will open on 31 October with only the first 1,000 applications to be considered.

Chief constable Mike Barton said: "Policing continues to evolve and remains an excellent career for those wanting to join us."

Application forms will be on the force website from 09:00 GMT on 31 October.

Durham currently has 1,231 police officers, as well as 150 police community support officers and 90 special constables.

More than 1,000 people applied for about 50 officer roles in 2012 when a two-year recruitment freeze was lifted.

Typical ridiculous limit put on applicants. 1000. Why not have the "window" open for a day or a week to give a broader spread. Up to 60 out of 1000 isn't brilliant for the organisation but better odds for anyone lucky enough to be one of the 1000. Good luck to any that get through. They're going to need it in the coming years.

Load of tripe I'm afraid, retirement age is now 60 or 55 at the earliest with a heavily reduced pension.

Wrong again, when the new pension scheme starts in April 2015 there will no longer be such a thing as a "full pension" you can simply claim what you accrue in the CARE scheme, normal pension age will be 60 however you can retire at 55 if you like but the pension will be actuarially reduced from 60. In practice this means you are probably stuck til 60 to get some kind of liveable pension.

People on current schemes are being shafted too, I should have reached my "full" pension entitlement just before my 50th Birthday after 30 years service. now after 30 years my pension will only be approximately 55-56% of what i signed up for after being forced onto the new scheme, realistically it means i am stitched up with an extra 5 to 10 years service to get less pension.

Signing new recruits up to a substantially reduced pension scheme is shocking, but understandable as necessary. Slashing already established long running pensions by that much is criminal. It was a signed contract essentially, and should be honoured as such.

I think part of the problem is that people don't realise how valuable the pension benefits are. I am a trustee of my company scheme. We went DC years ago but for those who are still on the old DB (final salary) scheme the funding costs are huge - 44% of salary for the last year. I am sure the old police scheme was more generous than ours, so probably 50% plus.

My forces pension has been changed in a similar way, and it wasn't even that good for 8 years service.

When I completed my service i was given a document contaaining the details of my pension. They recent changed the terms, but didn't even have the good manners to inform me.

Force is notne contrubutaory though isnt it?

I pay best part of 6k a year into mine. (Yes i know its still great gold plated blah blah blah but its still worth about 300k less now than what i signed up for when the extra years at work are considered)

Yep, it's a huge chunk of pay every month. Still probably worth it, but a chunk nonetheless.
