As above I was coming into work this morning and passed workmen chaining a black box to a lamp post by the Sainsbury roundabout going into Bedford. Then passed another group outside Nando's by the river doing the same, then another group on the other side of the river. By the time I got to the last group my interest was up and noticed two camera's bolted to the lamp post.
I am assuming they are to catch road tax evaders, comments please.

If they are traffic counters make sure they are legitimate. "Developers" tried putting up Cameras in our Village to support their plan for 900 homes. Unfortunately for them they had no planning permission and hadn't notified anybody at the council of their actions. The Council were miffed as the Lampposts they had placed them on were brand new. They were spotted and the council had them removed.

Don't need planning permission.

Do need the permission of the highway authority if they are fixed to a lamp post. Sometimes getting the permission of "the left hand" in the council doesn't prevent "the right hand" getting miffed, because they don't always speak to each other.

Maybe not but as the Council and Local Parish Council, (who used funds to pay for "heritage" lamp posts), knew noting about them I doubt they bothered telling anyone. That particular Developer has tried a few "sharp" practices in the area. Generally they now get the answer "No and what is the question?".

its to meet the road works signing and guarding regs. work is starting to link the A428 - A6.

If you use this way into and leaving Bedford I would start to look for an alternate route.
