Tradesman dispute
Discussion
People seem to be forgetting that the tarder has a legal duty not to mislead and provide the consumer with relevant info. w
'couple of hundred' means £200.
if the wker wantt 500 he should have said 500.
I would pay 200 and tell him to take it to court.
If it goes to court and the court does not believe 'a coupel of hundred' was ever said then a reasonable amount will need to be paid - which may or may not be over a couple of hundred.
if the tarder has a habit of going round implying things will be a certain amount and they end up costing more he may be comitting offences.

Are you absolutely sure that it's £490 for fitting and not £300 for the window and £190 for the labour?

Read the thread! The cost of the window was additional to the amount in dispute.
I have read the thread and it seems a coincidence that the guy quoted a couple of hundred quid and...rotarymazda said:
Roofing rates in South Cambs are £120-180/day.
Add in some consumables and £190 sounds about right and we know that the window is £300.Nowhere in the OP's posts does it mention that he has spoken to the tradesman himself, it sounds like all of his info is second hand from his mother from my reading of it. So in light of the uncanny sums involved, I'm asking is he 100% sure that the £490 bill is just for the days labour? Has he spoken to the guy and got it from the horses mouth so to speak?

pay him the original amount agreed ie 200 and let him sue for the balance. I doubt he will. All people saying roll over are idiots - why should his mum be ripped off? A fair job for a fair price - and this doesn't sound like it is.

Not yet, but i will do. As I understand it, it is £490 and a request for a separate cheque for circa £300 to pay supplier. I'll be following this up to make very sure I know what is going on though. Thanks for all advice everyone.Nowhere in the OP's posts does it mention that he has spoken to the tradesman himself, it sounds like all of his info is second hand from his mother from my reading of it. I put 3 velux windows in a roof in a day for my father-in-law. He gave me £100!! I was home before the kids finished school, so not the end of the world but looks like I should be in for close to £1500!
