Just walking down Tottenham court road earlier, kids on pushbikes tried to knock me over and steal my phone.

On this occasion no one was hurt and they got away before I grab one of them.

Had I been able to catch one, what guidance is there on restraining a minor who has attacked me? (ie is it reasonable to pin him down as you might do with an adult while waiting for the police? Would it be reasonable to pull one of them off a bike?)

Just curious on peoples opinions should it ever happen again. (and if I'm fast enough)

Judgement call on your part. If you can justify it as reasonable force, I probably wouldnt have a problem with it:

That gang have been mugging people in that area for at least a month, I work round the corner and have seen them grab bags twice now, over the course of 4-5 weeks.

As long as they can't identify you I'd say this is the best option.

Worth knowing, thanks! (I'm based in the area too)

Interesting MO, and they are taking huge risks with the traffic... Wonder how long before one gets flattened.

Thanks for the replies smile

This.

Idiots have a knack for dragging you down to their level, and then beating you with experience.

Wouldn't matter what age they were in my opinion.

If they are old and stupid enough to try and nick my phone then i'd think nothing of giving them a bunch of fives to the jaw.

Regents Street has a huge incidence of theft - handbags, phones, laptops etc.

Hit them in the face with the palm of your hand, it hurts them but best off all no damage to your hand.

If you really want to be vindictive, stamp on the shin (but that could be jail time for you, if caught)

If its a group of kids just try to get away cause they would probably be armed. If it was just one crazy kid, absolutely nothing wrong with holding him down till the police arrive. Just make sure you are not holding him by his neck.

The same law as to reasonable force applies as would apply to an adult.

Are you worried about yourself and phone or how police/CPS may deal with your defensive action?

A good guide on 'reasonable force' from Wales earlier this year...

Stunned that if this has been going on for a while that there are no undercover cops to collar them. Obviously the little pricks know that they are going to get away with it.
