Seeking info on doing things properly rather than making a mess of it! Bought a pleasant old car with a mildly distinctive number (not the original reg no.). It's not particularly valuable, maybe £100, but looks nice. Intend keeping the car when fettled so placed the number on retention cert. and received the original registration number which is more suitable to the car anyway and completes the picture. If I decide to sell the retained number do I merely write on the certificate the name/address of the Nominee (the chap that wants to buy it) in the relevant space? Is it really as simple as that? Thanks in advance.

Are you sure the plate can be transferred? In a lot of cases the original plate could be, but a second plate issued to the vehicle cannot. It stops someone with an old car simply putting a plate on retention, getting issued with a new one, putting that on retention - rinse and repeat.
Worth checking before you proceed any further.

Thanks for that. Yes, it's all done. I have the retention certificate V778 with the number the car had when I bought it and the new V5C with the replacement number (actually the original number at first registration). I know the DVLA pages are pretty good but sometimes they seem to miss bits out!

Agreed but on the last few cars I've transfered plates onto and then off again they've made the original number non transferable - strange but that's how it went

Yes.

And pay the £25 due.

Don't you already pay that in the £105 when the car is put on the V778? £80 retention plus £25 transfer.

No. Adding or changing a nominee costs an additional £25. This is clearly stated in Section 2 of the V778.

Thanks gents. I was aware of the section 2 and relevant notes in C overleaf in V778. I too thought that the £105 covered everything but it now seems they want an extra £25 for any admin change! I'm sure that's in the realms of 'Penalty' rather than standard clerical costs. However, there are so many scams about these days I was keen to avoid doing something stupid if and when I decide to sell the number. Not that I don't trust the motor trade of course...

yes No different from an insurer wanting their similar pound of flesh for changing the VRM or adding a named driver on a certificate.

Daylight censored robbery.

The key words are add/change. The trick is knowing who the Grantee will be when making your application.
See Section 4 and guidance note A on form V317.

Yet.......

If you change the keeper on the V5 to the other person, then put the plate on retention, then change the V5 back to your name, it is all free.

A bit extreme I know, but proves a point......

Indeed - damn clever

But would I want to be that clever to save £25

Wouldn't it cost more than £25 to do? £25 to: DVLA, insurance co = £50.

Doesn't have to be insured - can be on SORN - just has to meet the requirements of plate transfer

But whilst I applaud the principle and it's very clever I don't think I'd do it to save £25 that's all
