this morning en-route to London a police patrol car jointed the motorway with no lights on, it was just after 7am still dark, motorway lights were still on and everyone else on the road had theirs on, was this some sort of stealth driving? funny thing was it was a Volvo and all the Volvos I have driven have their light on as standard.

did you see it from the front or the back?
very common at the moment to see people around this time of day without lights on because there daytime running lights come on and that's enough for them to think their lights are on, or in some cases people are misunderstanding and think that the rear lights come on too so they don't need to put them on in conditions where you'd consider sidelights sufficient

Most Police Volvo's have had their DRL's disabled.

It's possible they were trying to sneak up on someone.

A fully marked up car with reflective battenburg livery is probably just as visible as a plain car with its headlights on in certain conditions so it's possible the driver didn't think headlights were required at the time.

Or they forgot to turn them on.

Too many modern cars have dashboards permanently illuminated, so inattentive drivers think they have lights on when they don't.

+1. Amount of times I've driven a couple of miles before noticing (roads have good street lights).

Police Volvos don't or at least the latest TVP ones don't. Cant sit up hiding with the engine running if your lights are on.

My golf has the dials lit up all the time, but when you go somewhere too dark the clocks dim down and the needles stay lit which prompts you to put your lights on.

It's not ilegal to drive with no lights on on a lit road

I think it's actually on a restricted road during the hours of darkness only your positioning lamps are required!

I had a police car with no lights coming the other way at 5am on Boxing Day. I flashed her several times, but she didn't notice.

A little worrying...thought plod was supposed to be observant. I mean, I might have had a mad rapist in my car and plod just ignored me.

You were very observant to realise it was a female officer. What with it being 5am in the morning. Apart from that, sounds legit.

That was ....:cough:.... a (non-PC) joke.

See what I did there?

Once upon a time, I stopped a Lothian & Borders patrol car to let them know that they had no rear lights - not even brake lights. They thanked me for letting them know and said "great, we can head back to station and get a cuppa". Another tim, wound down window at a set of traffic lights to let another Lothian & Borders patrol know they had a headlight out. "F*ck off and mind your own f*cking business" was what I got. I followed them to station, and waited till they'd been in 5 minutes then my 2 passengers and I went in and asked to see the duty inspector. We duly gave our statements, then the patrol car passenger happened to see us, and actually said "what the f*ck do you want?" He apparently was immediately suspended. The 3 of us got written apologies from the Deputy Chief Constable.
