Hello police peoples, I wonder if you can help me out with a question or two...

I am coming back to the UK after a good 10 years working abroad. Going through all our old paperwork we find that Mrs Oilydan's driving license has expired in November 2013.

Actually, since expatriating she has married me and therefore changed her name, sold the house and therefore changed address and got older so therefore expired. Oh dear.

She gets into the UK on December the 8th and we cannot apply for a new one before then as the passport is required, so how can we get her behind the wheel again with minimum fuss and no chance of falling foul of the law smile ?

Will she be able to drive while a new license is being applied for? I'm told this can take 2 weeks (longer if Christmas gets in the way?). I'm not getting back until the 18th so she'll be stuck, not able to sort out the new house etc.

What if we took copies of all documents and forms to present while the application was under process? Would this be sufficient to prevent a hefty fine for driving with expired license?

Help appreciated.

Which country are you coming back from? Do you have a driving licence from that country, if so you can generally drive in the UK on that licence for 1 year before you would need to convert to a UK one. The fact you already have a UK one as technically they're valid till you're 65 AFAIK means just the photo part and address needs updating.

I'm sure you could get insurance based on either one with a bit of research.

What's expired? Her actual licence (she's hit 70?) or the photocard?

If it's just the card, have you tried online?

In the meantime, has she got a licence from wherever you've been in the interim?

Great thinking guys.

Unfortunately her UAE driving license expires at the start of December too! We have been here for 10 years already it would seem smile

It is only the photocard that has expired, the paper part says 2046. But she will have to send off both parts for name and address change?

ok, seems the best course of action is getting the UK passport renewed as off the back of that you can renew the photocard.

Can you not get the UK passport renewed in the UAE on a fast track now?

Passport is all done.

Its just that she needs it to travel back so we cant go posting it back for a DL renewal as is needed for the name change on the DL.

Things getting tricky now. Did you have to give a UK address for the passport, if so can't you use that for the driving licence?

Everything about renewing the driving licence states having a UK residence and having addresses over the last 3 years.

I'm sure there's a way around this but I thing it will involve a call to the DVLA which I'm sure will be bundles of fun.

So have a crack online...

A mildly expired photocard isn't the end of the world - she's still legal to drive, since her actual licence entitlement doesn't expire until 2046.

True. It will renew the photocard but where will the DVLA send it??????

Renewal online is fine if it is just renewal, but with a change of name and/or address it has to be done by post, with all the supporting documents such as her passport.

I guess she'll just take copies of everything and send it all off, hoping that she doesn't get a 7 day producer in the interim...

Good luck op, not wishing to piss on your parade or anything here, but my licence expires on the 4/11/14. DVLA have had the paperwork since August, and still haven't done it, they have a bit of a backlog due to budget cuts/increased workload as they've closed all the local offices/just being DVLA.

So I'd suggest you get your application in asap.

I'd also recommend you only send copies of documents especially not the actual passport. Plus send everything tracked and recorded as proof just in case something goes wrong.

Another option could be if you know/can contact who is at current address that's on record for licence just to renew photocard online then pick it up from said address and sort out address change when back in UK.

The answer to you question is probably yes, but it depends. See this for details:

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/52/sectio...

You would need to know that the application has been received - therefore I'd recommend Signed For post.

Please stop spelling licence incorrectly, it does not contain an 's'.

Your photocard must be renewed every 10 years, your licence cannot just "expire". Look on the reverse of the photocard and it will show that you have entitlement to drive certain categories of vehicles normally until the day before your 70th birthday.

If you are caught driving with an expired photocard then you are only committing a non-endorsable offence and the punishment is a small fine.
