M1 average speed cameras southbound junction 19
Discussion
I'd like to warn everyone of the 50 limit on m1 junction 19. Traveling south
I came through sat morning. Sun very low missed the speed sign as didn't see it as so much glare and first camera is craftely placed hidden by a bridge so you don't see that either,
If anyone from the highway agency is reading this you are causing more danger to motorists by not giving a proper visible warning before the one and only one 50 mph speed limit sign.. It does not warn you before hand that there is a reduced speed limit approaching only a road works sign which doesn't always have a reduced speed..
Something needs to be said as it's so dangerous to suddenly slam on your brakes.. More warning signs please...

You don't have to slam on your brakes, just slow and run below 50 for a while to get your average down. Anyway, I think camera 1 is a bluff, it doesn't have floodlights at night.
If your average is below 57, you're ok.
Travel through any roadworks at night and you'll see only a few SPECS cameras with powerful floodlights illuminating the road in front of the camera. If it needs this light to work, then only a few cameras are active, the rest are bluffs.
That one does not have floodlights, if I remember correctly.

I have been travelling through this 50 zone for months. There are advanced warnings of roadworks ahead at least 1 mile before the limit takes effect - and the start of the zone is so heavily coned - it's very hard to miss. There are both speed limit and speed camera signs on the approach to the zone.
Didn't the rest of the traffic slowing to 50 kinda give you a clue?

Seeing as I have in car camera I can confirm no cones before or after the 50 sign or first camera. The cones start at the second camera,,,50 sign not visible due to sun pointing at your face. Just a round shadow
Cool - post the footage to youtube - or perhaps post a couple of screencaps here - it'll help us assess just how bad the situation was.Moonhawk said:

There's plenty of warning that the roadworks are coming up. And roadworks on a motorway tend to mean a 50 limit, no matter what your camera detector says.
Should've been more observant, sorry.
I have just driven South through these works in the last 15 minutes and can confirm that there is indeed limited signage.
There is an initial sign which warns that disruption will take place until 2016, then there is one pair of 50 signs, then within perhaps 60-70 metres, a bridge with the Specs cameras hiding just behind it. That's the extent of the advance warnings; I was convinced that there was loads of signs before the start of the works, but there is definitely not.

It doesn't. SPECS uses infra red illuminators.Hackney said:

So, how do you engage your power of observation in the OP's circumstances, when the low sun makes signs impossible to see? There's plenty of warning that the roadworks are coming up. And roadworks on a motorway tend to mean a 50 limit, no matter what your camera detector says.

The OP saw the sign but insists due to low sun could not read the number.
If that is the case he should have been thinking I was in an NSL, the limit has now changed and the only way it could have changed is lower, I should be checking for clues to the new limit.
Roadworks
Reduced width lanes
Speed of other traffic
Gantry repeaters etc etc
On another note, does anybody have a car which has the camera fitted for reading signs? How does it fare in low/blinding light? Would it have picked up the sign in this case?

If the sun/glare was so bad that is was "impossible" to read a speed limit sign - one really must question whether the visibility was sufficient to continue safely travelling at speed anyway. The OP says they have in car camera footage of the incident - why not post it to demonstrate just how bad it was - it may be one way to silence the doubters.
