She has an old Punto that is SORNED currently.
She has sold it pending it getting an MOT/ MOT not being terminal.

Car is no longer insured, is it possible to get one day insurance for it, even tho it is SORNED?

You do not need insurance if the car is SORN.

But she does need insurance to drive it for an MOT!!!

Getting insurance is not dependent on a vehicle having tax, and she doesn't need tax to drive to and from a pre booked mOT, so yes, she can get insurance without taking it off sorn.

So how is she going to get it to the MOT place?

As far as I understand it, OP, once you insure a car it ceases to be SORN. So no, you technically can't, but in essence, yes smile I may be wrong. Cue a huge argument either way.

Yes it is possible to get 1 day insurance (Aviva seem to be one of the main providers) and it would then be legal to drive it to and from a pre-booked MOT with no tax.

That is rubbish AFAIK. It is not possible to tax an uninsured car but it is possible to insure an untaxed car.

Oh, looks like I was wrong, the SORN only expires if you tax it.

If she wishes to drive it to get an MOT then it needs to have insurance. If she doesn't want to do this, arrange to take it to the garage on a tow truck. Lots of garages will pick cars up then it's insured under their trade policy.

If she is nice to a local garage, they will probably collect and deliver it back for her.

We do this quite frequently, fluttering eyelashes do wonders sometimes smile

Complete rubbish, if you don't know don't answer!
All she needs is to insure it, drive it to & from its MOT job done.

It needs to have insurance to be driven on the road. Tax I was wrong about but it MUST be driven only to a pre booked MOT.

So to the OP :

Yes just get 1 day insurance and you'll be fine. Or save some money and get the garage to come collect it (They will be covered under their trade insurance) They want your money/MOT at the end of the day.

Which is what I said 3rd post in. Also, it can be driven back from the MOT without tax.

I did this for my currently SORNed Westfield. I'll do it again next year I expect. It gives me a legitimate opportunity to drive it on the road once a year and, of course, gets me an MoT for it should I want to tax it quickly. It is always insured as 'laid-up' and I had that upgraded to road insurance for 24 hours.

Sorry I was unclear, the ins is to get to the pre booked MOT, its with a local Halfords Auto Center, so I don't think they will collect.

I will point her in the direction of Aviva.

Thanks for the help

You weren't. It was obvious that she needed the insurance to drive to and from the MOT. Well, it was to me, and I'm no Inspector Morse!

You don't need insurance to tax a car.

Point her in the direction of a garage other than Halfords too!

This and, what happens if it fails and Halfrauds can't complete the work the same day, or for a week due to some part that is on back order from Fiat blah blah.

Get a local garage to collect it, don't get ripped off and save on the insurance cost. Sounds like a win win tbh.
