I don't have a car at the moment and for years I've been a named driver on my dads insurance for if I take him away or we go out together etc. I don't live with him and his car is kept at his house and registered in his name.

Last week he went to hospital and has been diagnosed with having had a seizure. Because of this he had to tell the DVLA and can't drive for 12 months.

To make it easier to help look after him he has leant me his car for the next few months until I buy a new one. I am a named driver on his policy but I'm not sure where we stand in relation to his policy. I assume he will be classed as having no driving license so will his insurance policy still be valid. If it is valid does it make a difference that it will be kept at my house more often.

I'm sure the insurance company will say I need to take out a new policy but I just wanted to know the legal position before I phone them.

Thanks

You must ring the insurance company, it is a material change to the circumstances of the policy holder.

You may or may not be pleasantly surprised by what they say... But they need to know sooner rather than later smile .

So does the DVLA, for that matter (if they haven't already been told) smile .

The post code the vehicle is kept at overnight changed so for sure the risk has. Also now you're the main driver. They need to know.

When I had to surrender my licence for medical reasons, just transferred the driving to my brother. Very easy to do, and cost me nothing, although I was using a full fat insurer, not a cheapy. Remarkably painless really.
