Accident and insurance renewal due soon
Discussion
Had an accident tonight, my fault,my car is a write off, the other drivers car probably a write off.
My insurance expires on saturday. How is this going to work out?
I'm fully comp so i presume the damage to both cars is eventually going to be sorted out.
I was going to move my insurance to another company but as my car has just had it's door removed by the firemen i can't insure it and use the 3rd party cover to borrow my mums car?

Thankfully I took it off and put the spare on shortly after that I'd inform your insurance company. Tell them all about the accident.
Technically, once the car is written off, there won't be an insurable interest so you'll have to put the policy on hold or transfer it to a new car.
However, the vehicle hasn't been assessed by an insurance engineer yet so it hasn't been written off. I doubt this will happen before Saturday.
If I were you, I'd let the policy run and lapse at the end of it's term in Saturday and then start a new policy thereafter. Obviously, your NCB will be reduced to reflect this accident and you'll have to declare it when you go for your new policy with any new insurer.

As i'll have an open claim and a mangled car will another insurer consider taking me on or is it better to stay with my current insurer (their renewal was £200 dearer than others )? Is the lack of a door classed as a modification?
I don't think it will matter. Your current insurer or any new insurer will have to be told that you've had an accident. They'll load your premium accordingly. You'll have to check with your insurer how many years NCB you'll have at the end of the annual term after they've deducted however many years you lose for an accident. Just stick the details into a price comparison site.
