Just read this thread and it's got me worried.

If he's been fined for having a car that wasn't re-insured, I think I might be in the same boat.

My story is that I've got a Mini Mayfair, fairly rusty but it's got MOT and (old style) tax disc until May. I bought a newer Mini so the old one is up for sale, but I'm in no rush, so it's parked in my back garden until I either advertise it or fix the rust on it to make it an easier sale.

My question is - I transferred my insurance from the old Mini to the new one, so the old Mini has no insurance at the moment.

How do I declare the old Mini as off the road? I don't want to insure it, it's not going to go anywhere near a road.

Just found the online Sorn section of the DVLA website.

Now declared as off the road and I should get some cash back, unless they fine me for for a weeks worth of no insurance.

I had my bike taxed and uninsured for nearly two months, haven't heard anything yet.

My problem with this rule is the fact a potential buyer cannot test drive the car. Making the sale of my old car a lot more difficult!

Assuming they are insured, you could book the car into an MOT at a local garage, and make the test drive a trip to a full dry inspection for the buyer.

I had a similar problem last month. I bought a new car and was offered rubbish money for my part ex, so thought I'd sell it privately. Then the problem of the continuous insurance raised its ugly head. Luckily the new car had 7 day drive away insurance so that bought me some time. I was then left with the choice of insuring the old one, but how to insure a car for a unknown amount of time without suffering big costs, or sorn it and then not be able to do a test drive. I ended up lucky that my friend offered to put it on on his trade policy and as it was it was only for a week or so. It's just rubbish that normal law abiding citizens are having things complicated by a minority of people who can't be bothered with the whole insurance thing.

"Problem" has existed for the honest since time immoral... And many insurers will sell you a months cover for the old car for the exact purpose of keeping it legal and being able to sell it.

I first needed it and got it over 15 years ago.
