I'd be concerned that the nails and screws would injure the tree.

He should put up a pole on his side if he really wants a light there.

^Yes this. only a complete moron would think this is okay, I suspect he knows exactly what he's doing and it's calculated to offend.

I'd go with the free electric suggestion, you could also pop a switch in to trip his RCD out just for fun, done properly he should have no idea whats causing it. or fit a random timer to do the same.

Yes I had read it before answering so I know you sent him an email. Just seeing if you got a response from him that was all?

Well, nothing material has changed but I did get a reply. He wants to "discuss" it as it was put there before he moved in. I don't want to discuss it as there isn't much to discuss.
So, as I said earlier, its not the biggest issue in the world and time will come when he needs cooperation from me.

sounds like there is a bit more to it then if it was put there before he moved in.
Was it also put there before you moved in? Or did you have no problem with your previous neighbour installing it there?

Does anyone know if it is ok (either legally or on safety grounds) to run armoured cable up a tree and fix a security floodlight to the tree.
A neighbour has seen fit to do this to a tree on my side of the fence!

May well have been but I've only recently noticed it.
