I'm getting confused about this but I'm sure someone here can help more than the DVLA/Post Office can.

Yesterday I bought 2 cars, both failed their (pre-booked) MOTs and are both now home and on the drive. I want to SORN them so I don't have any issues with fines but I took the V5C/2 to the post office and he said I can't SORN them without the V5 or V11, I have to phone the DVLA and do it on there, however, this doesn't work either as you need the V11 or V5 to do that. Have obviously tried to do it online but I can't do it on there.

My question is, will I have any issues with fines etc. if I wait until the V5 arrives, or is there a way to SORN without the V5 or V11 that I'm missing?

Apologies for this being my first post, long-time lurker that's only just signed up! byebye

This one is slightly more interesting than the usual I can't figure out how to tax a car under the new system.
The guidance is you must tax the car before you use it, I've not seen anything about what if you don't want to use it. I would have assumed you could sorn it with the green slip, I have no idea what the reason for not allowing that would be.

One might suggest that they prefer you to give them money, rather than a reason not to give them money.

Another anomaly for DVLA?? I reckon........ Print off a V890 SORN form, fill it in,date it from the day you parked it in your drive, tick the box about you being a new keeper, post it off.
I find it strange though that online and at the post office ref numbers from V11 or V5 are wanted for SORN but are not asked for on the V890 form ??

Just make sure it does not go near the road, lock the gate,or what ever.

Was it SORNed before you bought it?

If so, I really wouldn't sweat too hard. I bought an old Landy over the summer, SORNed for the last few years. I could've sworn I SORNed it when I got it, but happened to check it a couple of months later. Nope, not SORNed. Oh, arse. SORNed immediately, obv, and haven't heard a sausage since. It should get taxed this week, so if anything'll pop up, it'll be then - but I doubt it.

You have to re-sorn a car you purchase as the original SORN stops when the car is transferred. I did the same thing a couple of years ago, left it a month or two before checking and had to SORN the car myself, I didn't hear anything from the DVLA regarding the gap in dates.

A what? laugh I had seen that but I assumed, wrongly I suppose, that there must be a quicker way of doing it.

Exactly, there seems to be no reference on any government or DVLA page to the green slip, unless I'm missing something

Yes, you should, but I'm almost 100% sure you can't

Thanks for your help everyone, I'm either going to leave it and wait for the V5 to arrive, or I'll fill in the V890.
