Long story short was insured with eChoice and had to pay extra £50 for a change of car for 2 months which I did, upon renewal time I went with Aviva but unknown to me eChoice renewed at £650 odd in Feb 2014 and I have only now realised as I just got a "your car insurance is soon due" from eChoice (I am horrified at the waste of £600)

So I have had unwanted insurance from eChoice for nearly a year - they are closed today (I opened the letter today) and want to know of any experiences any of you have had as I 100% did not renew but neither did I cancel however they have taken the payment without permission BUT in the T&C`s it might have a clause (I haven't checked)

Anyone have any advice for an idiot

Didn't you need your proof of no claims from echoice to send to the insurer you moved to?

Send them a copy of your Aviva policy for the same period, explain what happened, and see if they might think about at least a partial refund.

As an aside, how the hell do you have £600 taken from your account and not notice? I think that's your major worry. You urgently need to get a grip on your finances.

Just as easily done the other way round too

I didnt notice Direct Line hadnt taken £400 for my auto renewal policy of 15y plus as its the same anniversary of all of my work subscriptions as well as VED , a service and loads of other stuff too

Despite speaking to them on he phone to confirm and make a minor amendment the day before they cancelled my policy without communication when the renewal didnt go through with the inevitable ANPR pull soon afterwards

Explain what has happened and you'll almost certainly get a full or partial refund, it happened to me with the house insurance.

You'd have had a good chance if it was a month. But a year? No way.

Oh, it will. And you WILL have agreed to it, whether you knew it or not.

Is this a PH first? We have one poster complaining about auto renewal and one complaining it doesn't auto renew.

Will heads start to explode?

There's no way on Earth hundreds of pounds could either leave my account when it shouldn't or not leave my account when it should without me noticing. I must run my finances incorrectly.

I never realised the key to being rich was paying for your insurance twice. That's where I went wrong!

Is it not an offense to be double insured? Or maybe only if you claim on both.

You can take out as many policies as you like on your car. However, as you rightly say, the issue is when claiming, ever they will all pay their share eg 10 insurers, so they all pay 10%, or there's a big argument over who pays it all. One thing's for certain amd that,s that you won't be getting 10x the payout.

I'm a fan of auto-renewal but you really do still have to keep your eye on this stuff, not just for yourself, but for other dopey family members too.

LV= auto-renewed my home insurance a few weeks ago and we absolutely did not get any prior notice. They also issued a car insurance policy for my daughter set up for the previous year - so she was immediately uninsured!

There's a case on the insurance ombudsman's page of a company who insisted the policyholder had rung to cancel and they wrote to confirm it. He assumed it had renewed then crashed and they rejected his claim. But they couldn't produce a recording or a copy of the letter. Hmm....

They're just saying that. They figure that if they don't send it, you'll never notice! hehe
