Just raise a dispute with ebay, they'll side with you as you didn't get the item.

^This^. Ebay will almost always side with the buyer. (one of the perils of doing business that way...)

As it was sent recorded, he will have a PO receipt showing the a: the tracking number, b: the destination postcode, and c: the exact weight to the gram.

He can claim compensation from Royal Mail if it was sent recorded for 'loss or damage'. However if the weight on the receipt shows that the key wasn't there, they could well put up a fight. Not your problem though wink

You signed for the envelope before you checked it had the key in it?
A) you're not allowed to open the letter before you sign for it
B) the OP probably wasn't expecting the envelope to allegedly contain a key fob and would have had no idea what to suspect was in the envelope.
You don't need to open an envelope to tell whether there is anything in it. A trick I was taught is to give it a squeeze. I'm sure you'd be able to tell whether the bulky key fob was present.

I don't think it matters, ebay will side with the buyer.

I bet you really annoyed your parents at Christmas by squeezing all the gifts under the tree? smile

Anyhow, that assumes that you knew who the letter was from and what it was meant to contain. Even if you did, and there was no key, you're still going to sign for it, surely?

My point exactly.

It could have been from anyone, containing anything. No way to know it should be a key fob.

Sage advice. Assuming the OP is only ever expecting one parcel at a time.

I buy decals and stickers so thought it would be something like that. Didn't expect a key fob to be sent in a normal envelope.

The seller has just offered me £10 'goodwill' gesture because in his words 'it was me that put it in there'

I've told him I need a replacement key or my money back.

Something just doesn't add up.

The cost of postage seems to cheap and if I was adamant I put something in the envelope I wouldn't offer someone half the money back.

Joker. Just take it to eBay/paypal (or threaten to...) Tell him to claim off royal mail. You can't do this, as the RM contract for compensation is with the sender not the recipient.

(Keep the envelope/packaging, because it will have the tracking ID on it in case they ask to see it. IF he posted it the fob to you, he'll have a recorded delivery receipt showing the item weight.)
