To be honest, the main concern with these is the quality of the installation. I've known people to ask specifically for the wiring loom to not be spliced, only to find on removal that they had indeed spliced the loom to provide power to the device, and a poor splice at that.
Have you? So you were there when they asked specifically for that and there at removal stage too? Can you tell me about these insurers, as pretty well all of them are plug and play and don't go anywhere near the wording loom.

I understand that a black box fitted to a car can lower the cost of young peoples insurance but if you shop around you may not need one.

I have just sorted my 17 year old sons insurance:

2003 Toyota Yaris 998cc.Value £1600
Son owner of the car,V5 in his name and has had a provisional licence for 2 months.
Policy in my sons name.
2 named drivers me and the wife.
£250 excess.
Fully conprehensive insurance.

Total price for a year £366.68 from Quinn Direct.

I do understand that when he passes his driving test the premium will likely increase.
Just got pretty much the same deal from Quinn with no box on a 998cc Aygo for my own son.
It was about £400 (£33 per month) with windscreen and legal cover on top, but will go up to £1800 (£150 per month) for the remainder of the first year when he passes.

When my wife was learning she had insurance in her name and as it took her a year to pass her test she had a years NCD. Not all insurers accepted it as it had been gained when she was learning but enough did to enable it to make a significant difference to her premium. That and the fact she was 27 helped tremendously biggrin

I know you could ride up to 250 on L plates, I did it myself. But you had to be 17. At 16 you could only ride up to 50cc. That was the case in the late 70s. Not sure about 1968.
I know about 1968 because I was there riding bikes at 16! In those days you could ride anything up to 250cc on L-plates at 16, and once you passed your test you could ride anything on two wheels, and also of course drive a three-wheeler on a bike licence. After I passed my test I had a Bond for a short period - the starter motor never worked, and the easiest way to get the thing going was to open the bonnet, cock your leg up, and use the kick start biggrin

For my 18 yr old after he passed was £1700 with no black box for a 1.4 100bhp Fabia. This is with Hastings
