I've just applied for an updated photocard driving licence on line and the confirmation of transaction page asks me to surrender the old licence. Do I need to do this before I receive the old one? I would prefer to keep it, for photo ID, until I receive the new one if possible.

Oh, and if we're spending all this money on GCHQ, Drones, CCTV and this new "IT regiment" why do I have to provide 7 pages of personal information and a photo? Don't they know all about me already???

Same as licence for deceased. I found my late father's photo card in amongst his stuff .He'd only renewed it once after his 70th as ID for flying ,till he found that he could get a free passport, so as far as I could see it was expired. DVLA told me it was expired but hat it must be returned, whether or not I wanted is as a memento. I figured that they hadn't bothered dad in over ten years, I would hear no more. So far, a few years on I haven't.

@ THE OLD MONK ,LOOK AT https://www.gov.uk/free-passport.
Nigel - not according to the bloke at DVLA, that I spoke to . I think they were worried about misuse. But how could the licence of an 86 year old bloke with photo be changed ,to show some one else ,and with the need to change the driver number to match ? Even more remote these days, as it's possible to confirm a driving licence details on line with name and number. And then ,why not ask for his ye olde book style driving licence, with yearly /3 yearly renewal to be returned.

I have quite a few, even the old paper ones, and it even states so on the forms they send out when you are due a renewal , so I assure you it is correct.

Last two times I've done it, I've never sent it back, never heard anything from them.

Keep it as a spare.

Always handy if the French take your license for speeding.

I've just done mine and it said in the confirmation email I have to cut old one up and send in. I probably will, would be just my luck to be the one who does get fined! It's not exactly difficult.
