Private Plate PLOD aggro!
Discussion
Although it hasn't went the way the OP wanted it to , and to add a balanced view
I feel that the DVLA do sell the plates and make a massive profit doing so with the knowledge that people will bunch up letters together etc to get the plate to read what is being sold.
SO in the interest of fairness I feel that as long as an ANPR system can read and interpret the plate accurately it should be considered legal
- time for the law to be updated IMO

It does seem a bit vindictive if the plate works in terms of the ANPR allowing them to send out their essential speed tax demands and confirm you've paid the road tax, this is just irritating little jobsworth trying to get his own back on you for having the audacity of driving a nice car/disrespecting his authority.
However, you are putting yourself at the mercy of these guys because you want your numberplate to look like your nickname, there's really only one way around it and that's to get a compliant numberplate.
My opinion has always been with bikes and cars that just by enjoying them the way they're designed you're breaking some laws anyway so adding extra perils like small/vanity numberplates and exhausts you can hear in the next village, you're shortening the odds with zero practical benefit

It doesn't have to be only obvious to ANPR.I feel that the DVLA do sell the plates and make a massive profit doing so with the knowledge that people will bunch up letters together etc to get the plate to read what is being sold.

Nothing wrong with the law as it is.
The trouble with updating the law - is it's impossible! Unless you have a properly defined set of rules, some plonker will always mis-represent something so badly you cannot work out what the plate is really.
Bear in mind, a bit of dirt, an oblique view and some ANPRs will be happy some days, and not others.

bastardised plates should be fined equally with any other motoring offence. And squealing about DVLA sales/ANPR shouldn't change that fact.

I have to say OP, I don't THINK YOU HAVE MUCH OF an argument. You constantly showed YOUR contempt for THE law, and clearly AREN'T GETTING the message.
Change YOUR NUMBERPLATE TO the correct font and I EXPECT YOU WILL stop getting hastle OFF THE police.

DVLA are even advertising them as such, showing you the real plate and then in brackets what it could look like if you fked about with it.I saw a DVLA for a pre 1963 plate 130 OKY and then in brackets it read (BOOKEY) So a govt body are selling an item and showing you the appeal of using the item illegally!!
