Have you ever been on Mumsnet?

Saying that the forum "has turned into Mumsnet" or telling another florum member that they should "go and post on Mumsnet" seems to be a popular insult on PH these days. I wonder how many people who make such comments have actually been onto Mumsnet before?
Yes I have a user account on Mumsnet and I am regular reader and occasional poster on there. My complaint was that people are whining that anyone who doesn't like Personal Plates or (shock horror) has the temerity to call them Vanity Plates is a troll or is slagging.

The Mumsnet reference was based on the incidence of people there feeling they have been victimised because someone disagreed with them. As it goes, there would probably be a greater number of posters on Mumsnet who would say "oh boo hoo someone doesn't like your taste-free approach to conspicuous consumption wo(man) up and get over it" - there's probably a greater range of opinions on there.

It wasn't meant to be an insult, it wasn't meant to be a 100% accurate representation of Mumsnet, it was meant to be vaguely humorous - believe it or not, I have made some very good friends on there who I have gone on to meet in RL.
You shop in Ralph Lauren ?

Just an opinion, others are available.

True up to a point - but I 100% guarantee that people like my Mum, for example, wouldn't notice.

woodyTVR said:
Granted are there people that don't give a toss either way but the people posting how they don't notice or care seem to have pretty strong negative opinions about it!
I think you may be confusing two things - I do notice, I don't like vanity plates and I think they're a bit sad, but (see above) there are also people who genuinely, 100% don't even notice what plate is on your car.

woodyTVR said:
The dateless plates also tend to sell for a lot more than dated plates and the one on that Porsche would be worth and would sell for a lot more than £1500.
Can't argue with that - I don't see much logic to the prices/values when I see plates advertised - but I wouldn't pay a penny for one anyway, and people often have to explain what they are supposed to spell/mean say to me.

Do they use the phrase "This place is turning into Pistonheads" when people get all worked up because someone doesn't agree with them? biggrin

It reminded me of an episode of Mythbusters I watched last night where they were investigating the insult "You throw like a girl". The outcome of the testing was that men and women throw the same and the only difference is whether or not you have been shown/taught to throw differently.

I wonder what percentage of drivers couldn't even tell you the plate on their own car?

Except it didn't. It was up for sale at a well-publicised auction, with a reserve of £2.5k or whatever, and nobody wanted to pay that for it. Nobody even bid close to that, because it would have sold. Instead, it was punted out under the counter on a "Look, will you give us something, anything for this?" basis.

Because if you buy it from RT, they'll buy it from DVLA on your behalf. It's called "profit"...

BTW - £2400, £3190.40 total? If the £2400 is exc VAT, that's £2880, what's the rest?
Assignment fee to put it onto your car or to put it onto retention to be assigned later.
It's worse than that...

The total cost of a plate bought at a DVLA auction is (are you ready for this???)...

Hammer Price
+
VAT @ 20%
+
Auctioneer's Premium @ 8%
+
VAT on Auctioneer's Premium
+
Assignment Fee (£80)

Total Price = £80 + (1.296 x Hammer Price)

I'm tempted to offer DVLA £1000 all in.
DVLA phone number if you want a specific plate is 0300 123 0883.

They won't sell it to you, but they will put it in the next available auction (which is unlikely to be the next auction). I don't know what reserve they'll give it. I suspect that all 4x2 plates get the same reserve.

I don't suppose many punters buy plates at DVLA auctions - I'll bet it's a high % of dealers, who perhaps had all the 4 digit plates they wanted on that specific day in that specific auction. I get the list and it's huge and a bind to go through, they'd have to have something you really wanted, to take the time to go to which ever random city they held the auction at in the hope you won't get outbid.

There's no question a 4 digit plate will sell for more than £1500 if it's advertised at a price not an auction. Find me a plate that's 4 digits (2 numbers two letters) for £1500. I won't be too harsh on the search and ask for specific letters as it seems some people buy any letters for the look and lack of date mark.

Bear in mind that you still need to have 2 lines of letters / numbers even if you have 2 numbers and 1 letter it must not all be on 1 line on a bike, trust me this will be pointed out to you by the trivia, sorry traffic police...

And yeah, it's stupid, but it's the law.

You can look for them on the DVLA website,DVLA auctions.motoring magazines and newspapers

A two number two letter plate will not be as cheap as people on here think. You will be lucky to get one under £3-4000

So you should be able to make some easy money by buying all those £2400-reserve ones at auction, or even waiting until after and hoovering them half-price, then.

You can fund it by selling your current one for market value, and turning that round with three or four after the next auction.

This time next year, Rodney, you'll be a millionaire! Even better, you won't have to hide from the humiliation of driving a 13yo car, so you can rejoice in the fact you're driving something on a current non-vanity plate!

Its a shame that other posters dont accept other peoples opinion, views and thoughts and insist their views are what everyone should have but remember everyone is different.I could share my views on people that have too many vehicles that started use as farm vehicles but if people like them then thats fine.

..............

Yes its the same car but in my opinion with a private plate and not being reminded that its a 2003 car with the old plate and as it is in lovely condition makes me not want to sell it.Whats wrong with that.
If offends the PistonHead Master Race fanatics, and any view they don't subscribe to is wrong and when stated has to be put down in a flurry of negative remarks. Or so it seems.

Quite correct. They are trolls because of the way they express themselves, and keep expressing themselves.

You can ignore them and hope they will dry up and blow away. Or challenge them and make them look even more stupid.

In their mind they don't look stupid though as they don't have the capacity to think this.

So probably better to ignore frown

It seems people are getting more and more stupid these days, hence people making up expressions like "vanity plates" to make a point.

These plates are bought by many thousands of people. Seems they are quite popular then.

You don't have to post about them in a negative way but you do. Seems you care or notice more than you are letting on then?

the most important thing for me I have never thought the car is old and not thought of changing my car so saved me a quite a bit of money in the last 5 years.
It only cost you ~ £1300 to fool yourself into not thinking your car is old.

I have saved even more than that by .......oh no, never mind, you wouldn't get it....

BTW I wouldn't want such a brief reg - far too memorable.
£1300, OMG my personalised plate which hides the car being 13 years old cost me £250.

And the Sun is the best-selling "newspaper" in the UK, with the Daily Mail second.

I'm really not sure holding the preferences of the Great British Public up as arbiter of taste or quality holds water.

I think you're missing the point, which is 'so what?' live and let live. If someone wants a personal plate and they like it that's their choice, other people will appreciate it too. There's no need to steam into them with your negative view as though your opinion is right and theirs isn't.

It'd be like me meeting you and saying, 'your cardigan looks st, makes you look like a wker, how much was it? Any right minded person would wear a jumper - idiot' I'm guessing at cardigan because of the username lol.

Good Ideal but I checked with my friend at the DVLA they stopped doing deals with family and friends about 4 years ago.Now they just E-mail all the unsold numbers to people that have registered for their auctions, the price is non negotiable and the ones that dont sell get put back in the pot.I am happy with the number I have and have no desire to change it.

Theres no humiliation in driving a 13 year old car and have another car that is 42 years old.The new cars are so overprices which is reflected in 75% of sales being either company cars or leased. Also not a fan of depreciation.

Good for you,I am asuming it has two numbers and two letters but doubt it unless it was bought a long time ago.
