I understood it was the letter size, font, colour and spacing that mattered not the size of the plate. They say its built to BS standard so can't see the problem.

Well just got pulled for £100 fine and they also said 3d fonts are illegal but DVLA says otherwise.

What are the details on the fine? Never received one when I had a similar plate on an old car which came with it. One plod advised me when I pulled up somewhere - didn't actively stop me - but after looking it up, there didn't appear to be anything in the guidelines restricting plate size so long as there was 11mm or more around the letters. Then on a random stop I asked that plod and he had no issue with it.

2. Rules for number plates
Your number plates should:

be made from a reflective material
display black characters on a white background (front plate)
display black characters on a yellow background (rear plate)
not have a background pattern
Characters on a number plate can be 3D.

https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates/rules-...

3D Font is OK

OP - so do you have one of those plates you link to or are thinking of changing to one?

I'm assuming you don't have one, you're thinking of getting one and the concern is mainly the 3D aspect before you buy?

Remember a beat copper stopping me in a brand new car and asking me to produce an MOT going back 12 year ago. Took a while to convince him that its didnt need 1 until its 3rd birthday.

Print out a copy of this.

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2001/561/made/d...

Take to Police Station and ask them where in the Legislation it states that 3D fonts are not permitted, and where the minimum plate size is stated.

As long as the characters, spacing and margins are met, you could have a plate the shape of Africa and still be legal.

Haha I've had that one before too when he handed me a producer and I told him it was pointless as I didn't have one.

Rubbish.

Size of the plate does not matter - it is the size of the characters, space between them, and around them that matters. Look at something like certain aston, jag or range rover rear plates for example - they are big and not 'standard size'.
As such, smaller registrations can have smaller plates- as long as it meets the rest of the requirements with regards to font, character size and margin between and around the characters.

Regarding 3D: https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates/rules-...
Even halfords do 3D plates, and they ONLY sell legal plates

I've since been told I didn't have a GB logo badge, and the postcode of where they made is not present on the front plate (although the BS standard no is there).

GB Logo badge is optional, not required.

Postcode is required at the bottom of the plate, in the middle.

Sounds like they're being overly fussy - you must have done something wrong for them to get that picky surely?

Might help if we have a photo of the actual plate, on the car.

This link sums it up fairly well - http://www.premier-number-plate.co.uk/dvla-plate-r...

No postcode? But the link you provided of the plate clearly states:

"All plates are manufactured to BS AU 145d British Standards and will all have the British Standard Mark, Suppliers Name & Postcode printed on them to conform with current regulations."
