I didn't read the small print
If I had a fiver for everyone who doesn't read T&Cs I could have bought that 250 GTO...Many, if not all, couriers exclude liquids. Example - https://www.myhermes.co.uk/help/carry-guide.html
The compensation exclusion list can be a lot more extensive than you might think.
In particular electrical items. That covers a huge range of consumer goods.

Please be aware that the following goods are Excluded from Compensation for Damage:
Liquids
But if the parcel is "lost".. Then it should be covered as you're not claiming "compensation for damage".Liquids

i would still pursue the courier
they can't just turn around and say we ow you nothing it's excluded from compensation
If they said it was found to be leaking in transit and had to be disposed of, then maybe it would be fair, but they seem to have lost it
They can do exactly that.they can't just turn around and say we ow you nothing it's excluded from compensation

The terms and conditions of carriage specifically exclude compensation for liquids. This is the contract that you as the shipper enter in to with the company as a carrier.
You cannot get around it because it's "not fair" or on the fact that they have lost it.
Trust me, I do this for a living.

I didn't read the small print that says liquids aren't covered by any compensation, I even paid extra for said non-existent compensation.

If the term is unreasonable then it is not enforceable. The terms and conditions of carriage specifically exclude compensation for liquids. This is the contract that you as the shipper enter in to with the company as a carrier.

If the term is strict then it will need to have been brought to the attention of the OP. The courier was aware the items were liquid I suspect, and I also suspect they did not direct him to the paragraph that says his item is not covered. Indeed, given that they appear to have (as I read it but only skimmed) charged him an additional insurance premium...........
