Courier lost my package, claim off credit card?

I bought some expensive stone sealing liquid from a guy on eBay who offered collection only. I paid with Paypal funded from my Barclaycard and arranged a courier (who I've used lots of times before) to collect the parcel. The guy agreed to package it up so I emailed him the label.
It's been 10 days now and the courier finally admitted they'd lost the package. There's no compensation as the couriers small print says they won't compensate for liquids.
It now turns out that this guy's idea of packaging was to wrap it in clear clingfilm and sellotape the label to it, so it was clear (excuse the pun) to see what was inside.
I can't claim from the courier, a Paypal chargeback wouldn't be fair (or successful) as the guy is only guilty of s
t packaging and a lack of common sense.
Do I try to use my credit cards insurance? The item was over £100 so it should be possible to make a claim.

Assuming the seller arranged the courier It's their responsibility to refund you or resend another item and then pursue the courier if they so choose too. Credit card company would only step in if you got no joy by other means 1st.
Errrm, read the original post again .....I'd be surprised if your credit card company accepted.
Your cc insurance covers the item - non supply of, etc
I'd be surprised if it includes goods in transit cover on an item you have couriered....
I'd you didn't take out G.I.T cover with the courier, then I think you're going to have to suck it up....

I didn't read the small print that says liquids aren't covered by any compensation, I even paid extra for said non-existent compensation.Your cc insurance covers the item - non supply of, etc

It doesn't make him liable, but it's pretty irresponsible to package such an expensive item so that everyone who comes into contact with the parcel can see that it's worth stealing... if that's what has happened.
It's quite normal though - often computer related stuff just comes in the box it would be on the shelf in, even a Lenovo Thinkpad I got. Tyres always come wrapped in cling film.I can imagine the courier company not wanting to be responsible for liquids spilling, but do they not accept it's their fault if it gets lost / stolen?

Try contacting your credit card provider and tell them you paid for a service which wasn't received. They may do a chargeback for you and then its a waiting game to see if the couriers bank represent the chargeback with their terms and conditions. I would assume it'd be a fruitless endeavor with the charge being put back onto your card but worth a shot

Yes, it happens quiet frequently too. Try visiting a few paypal forums and you'll have your eyes opened. One of the reasons I don't sell anything remotely valuable on there. And people often say "do a charge-back" as if it's really easy, but in my experience the card companies first few answers are always to say no, you really have to push them to do it. Again, except for fraud - that was astonishingly easy.

The sellers obligations ceased when the item was collected from him.
The courier is responsible for the loss, OP arranged and paid the courier so their contract is with him.
Unfortunately a term in the contract limits compensation for liquids.
I'd be checking the terms of the contract regarding liquids... Specifically, loss of "package containing liquid" rather than "damage in transit, leading to loss of liquid from container".
If they still have the empty bottle.. You're stuffed.
If they have lost the bottle, I think you should have a chance with the courier.
