Sometimes... A friend sold his 1000cc superbike after going flat out at 184mph on a public road. Through guilt to the people that would have to pick up the pieces, to the people that he may have hit.

He was out of riding for two years and is back now much more sensible.

I dont really feel bad, but i always have in my mind "What would happen if..."

For example:

- That car up front pulled into the fast lane to overtake.
- This car turned quickly or braked sharply.

I feel comfortable as i drive to the conditions, its other people i dont trust....

However, i did drive like a complete idiot yesterday looking back. The Mrs was dropping some stuff at her mums so i was sat outside in the car.

Phone rings, its mum: "Dogs had an accident get home NOW"

This dog is my staff / whippet cross, been in my life 10 years. I love this dog to bits been with me throughout my teen years.

Mrs was in her mothers, all she heard was me launch the S4 as i put my foot down. Quattro working, all 4 wheels spinning, Turbos on full boost. And i drove rather spiritedly home, shot inside - dog was lying on the sofa with everyone around him..... with a dead leg....

fk sake man! Throwing his toys around and hit the arm chair and yelped, so his leg went dead and limp. Silly sausage!

On reflection i felt a bit guilty hooning it back to the house, but it must have looked / sounded awesome! Especially the launch lol

Rush home and take risks for the sake of an injured dog?! Are you a vet? Or do you put your dog's feelings ahead of the safety of other road users?

A friend of mine got the call everyone dreads - your mum is seriously ill, you need to get here now to say goodbye. She was two hours drive away and she drove a shade under 100mph the whole motorway. She got nicked. The only person who should have felt guilty was the guy who gave her a ticket IMHO. Oh, I should add that thanks to that stop her mother died without her daughter at her side.

I've only heard of one other person getting stopped under those circumstances, and he was given a police escort to the hospital.

No, why would I? I drive at a speed appropriate to the conditions, whether this is faster or slower than an arbitrary number on a stick purely defines whether I am at risk of the government stealing some of my money or not, nothing more.
Very much this.

Correct answer hehe

As to the OP, if I feel it's safe then it's not speeding in my head. Speeding means inappropriate or excessive speed to me, so the fact it's safe means I wasn't doing it.

Obviously occasions I've been stopped mean my observation wasn't up to scratch & I've worked on that aspect of things.

In the robot cars future, where you'll sit at the wheel on the phone, drinking coffee, watching a video with the car in autopilot, do you think speed limits should be raised?

People don't respect stupid laws conjured up by agenda peddling jobsworths.

In all honesty I've heard of similar situations with others getting escorted as well. Sadly not for my friend, and worse, she then had to go and explain it all to her regulator who also imposed a sanction because she had a conviction.

I looked at the images of that stretch of road and concluded that it's more than likely I'd have been doing the same speed along that stretch of road.

And if I'd been caught doing the same speed at the same place I'd have been expected to feel bad about it.

The make it as socially unacceptable as drink driving idea hasn't worked for me, not when I see pointless reductions for no reason.
I don't buy the PH meme about rigidly obeying lower limits but ignoring higher ones. I don't see what the difference is, especially now that there seems to be very little difference between some 30 limited roads and NSL roads.

I drive at, or close to the limit if I think there's a significant danger of me getting caught.

The rest of the time I drive at the maximum speed that feels reasonable.

Sorry, meant to add, I agree that the "make it as socially unacceptable as drink driving" bit has failed. The whole speed awareness course thing just makes people realise that everyone else that has been caught is just a normal person like them, and the fact that virtually everyone has been caught at some point just serves to make it no more sinful than getting a parking ticket.

Absolutely. Combined with insurers pretty much ignoring the first 3 points too!
