A mate had this issue a while ago. He was advised by the police to put a random sticker (even a GB sticker) on the rear of the car, that way if you do get zapped by a camera then you can help identify it as not being you.

Maybe get some plates made up with a thicker than usual border, something to make your car different to the cloned one.

I've had an email and a phone call (9pm) from Staffordshire police saying its a common occurrence they get this wrong (!) but I have to ask in writing for the photo of the offending car. They've also given me a direct line to ring but nobody will be able to help on that number until Monday.

Was this as a reply to your tweet?

Very interesting if so.

Why are people so surprised at using a tweet to contact an organization or company?

Did you all mock and giggle when email was first introduced?

I've seen several issues / problems sorted via social media as opposed to more traditional methods of communication.

That was the reason for my question. I think it is increasingly common and such a swift response would be an eye opener to the nay sayers.

Don't be too quick to take the piss, this seems to be the way the world is going now but at least it's one good use for Twitter

The reply was from their website. The tweet got a reply saying I need to call 101 or speak to my local force !?!?

Because so many companies and organisations publish an e-mail address, then totally ignore any enquiries through it. I don't know anyone without an e-mail address of some description, but I don't think I've ever read a tweet.

Both the tweet and the email got a response which I'm quite happy about. I'll see what happens Monday when I ring the number they provided when they phoned me as a result of the email.

Spoke to CMPG this morning. They say it's most likely a mis-read. I can write and ask for the details of the car but they won't release the photo because of data protection (even though its supposed to be my car!) and will only write back if the plate does read as my number as I can take action from there.

AFAIK the DPA protects the data of an identifiable living person. How do CMPG imagine that a photo of a car will breach that? Even if it showed the driver's face with sufficient clarity how would the OP be able to link it to a specific individual? Sounds like a BS excuse to me.

All this facebooking and Tweeting is for geeky beardy types, all untterly pointless!

Like your use of the word 'untterly', somewhat ironic I think.

You won't find many 'geeky beardy types' using social media, it's very much a thing for the proletariat; just shows how out of touch with reality you really are.

But private plates should only be used to disguise age otherwise they're for 'bellends' remember.........

laugh I'm surprised 22Reg doesn't like TweetBook. At the end of the day surely it's just like being behind enemy lines on a mission. Just like his Call of Duty Sniper profile on here, he can pop up occasionally online with a snarky comment, before vanishing Sniper style before anyone knew he was ever there hehe

And why would a Covert operative have a personalised plate anyway - surely that would just make identifying yourself much easier - not covert at all getmecoat
