So I just got home from work to find 2 letters from the dvla. I am moving this week and because I do not want any letters going to this address that are mine I did the paperwork to change the address on my v5 for my car a little while ago.

One letter says I am no longer the registered keeper and the other is a tax refund.

So who the fk is the registered keeper now!? I've checked online and my car is coming up untaxed as well! What happens with the car being not taxed or declared off road? I'm really concerned about the notification that I am not the registered keeper which makes me think someone else has somehow got the paperwork in their name.

Offices are closed until tomorrow morning but has anyone been in this position before? Your help is much appreciated.

Did you fill out the V5 correctly.Did you fill out number 6 New keeper or new name/address details.I think this is the correct part to fill out for change of address and if you ticked the new owner by mistake the DVLA will think you sold the car to someone with the same name as you at your new address.

If this happened at your new address you may have a letter from the DVLA saying you are the new owner of the car.

I may be totally wrong but that is my gut feeling of what happened especially as the letter says you are not the registered keeper and had a tax refund sent to your old address.

I definitely filled out the correct part and DID NOT tick the new keeper box. I have a very very rare surname so assuming a human processes the form they would have to be fking deranged to not work out it was an address change.

The person at the new address is my landlord and a family friend so will give him a ring first thing to see if any letters have come in my name tomorrow morning. This has left me in the st as I can't drive to work and I'm worried the dvla will clamp/tow it. If it is me down as a new keeper then that's another owner on the logbook too frown

If you filled the V5 correctly then it could be human error. It looks like you only gave your name on the change of address so I would not be surprised if you have a new V5 at your new address saying you are the new owner as the letter says you are not the registered keeper and had a tax refund sent to your old address.

You may not get the letter of the new V5 yet but if I was you I would tax the car for a month now or in the morning by phone or on the DVLA website so you can drive to work and if they think you are the new owner at the new address everything will be ok apart from as you said there will be an extra owner on the V5 and you can ring them about their cock up and maybe they can take the new keeper off.

Good luck.

I put my new address on the form. I didn't expect them to be able to work it out just from my name.

When you filled out the change of address form you put your name, date of birth, new address and postcode and send it off.You say you did not tick the new keeper box, date of transfer and present mileage so there must be a cock up by DVLA so you will be the new keeper as you did not give a different name at your new address.I would tax the car so you can drive it to work.

I had a similar thing a good few years ago with 2 cars. Both at the same time.

Phoned them up and they sorted it out. They reduced the number of previous owners to the correct figure etc.
I dont think it was instant (as in it took a few weeks to get the logbook through)but there was none of this continual tax/insurance nonsense to worry about.

How would having a local office have stopped this happening?

Why didn't/don't you use the mail forwarding service that The Post Office provide?

Then you can change the address on various bits of documentation at your leisure. Also NIPs and PNCs will come direct and you won't get penalty charges for not paying/not going to court etc.

I understand that it is sometimes called win win. I couldn't possibly comment.

Because there you would have talked to a real live person face to face and any queries can be ironed out there and then.

Given my previous experiences with local offices and Swansea, you have a far, FAR higher chance of dealing with a sentient being at Swansea. Sorry, but...

But on the other hand, both Glasgow and Luton local offices gave me excellent service and in the long term, both probably saved me money.

When there was a local office in Beverley, I had Zero problems with them.

How could I do that when I don't have the V5 anymore, don't have a tax reminder or a new keeper supplement because I'm not a new keeper? I think you should go and work for the DVLA you sound like their type.

UPDATE-

So phoned up the DVLA this morning and explained the situation. As some have suggested here, they have registered me as a new owner with the same name at my new address wobble. The lady (who was actually quite quick and helpful) said that she would get my road tax reinstated straight away so I can drive the car and she is going to send out another v5 (on top of the one already in the post at the new address) with the correct amount of registered keepers before I did the address change.

Being the paranoid person I am, I thought that someone may have intercepted the V5 in the post and put their details on it to try and register the car in their name. Also the fact I have been driving around since the 25th without tax worried me too!

So in summary, if you try and change your V5 address and get a letter saying you are not the registered keeper of your car any more and the tax has been cancelled then don't panic. Just phone them the next day.

You do not need the V5,tax reminder or the new keeper supplement to tax the car.

So I was correct in my posts in trying to help you yet you think its ok to abuse me by saying that I should work for the DVLA as I sound their type.

Its interesting that you have not said that the DVLA admitted it was their error and suspect you filled out the change of address incorrectly.

I see you are an automotive design engineer and you seam the sort of person who designed the AMC Pacer and Fiat Multipla.

So in summery if you change your address in the V5 fill it our correctly and dont panic like the OP did.

It was said in a light hearted way and a joke, no need to take things personally. It's an internet forum, things get said in jest quite a lot. But as you'd like to go down this road I'll bite.

Go to this web page. https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax. You may see why I legitimately think that you would need a V5, new keeper supplement or reminder to tax a car.

The fact I didn't say that the DVLA admitted it was their mistake is because they didn't. All the person on the phone said is she can see what has happened and she will get it rectified. That's a good enough result for me. As you seem to struggle to grasp it, I'll clarify it for you again. I filled out the form correctly, with my name, new address, any other necessary info and didn't tick the new keeper box.

I am an automotive design engineer that's correct. That allows me to spell words like "seem" and "summary" correctly. Although I have heard there are many other professions that also allow you to do this. I haven't stalked your profile yet to try and tie in your profession to the frankly useless responses you put on this thread.

Oh and with regards to the projects I have worked on, if you want me to throw around credentials I have worked for Mclaren and Ford so far in my relatively short career.

I am aware of what you need to tax a car on the website but if you ring them with your name, address, registration, make of car and explain the circumstances why you do not have the documents to hand they will tax the car.

What ever your thoughts I am glad you got it sorted.
