Done that for an hour or so while I walked our dog. Just reversed a caravan right up close to the van & wandered off giving them a cheery wave. I've got a pic somewhere, but I can't find it.

Evening,

Just wondering what the legality of asking a speed camera van "did you just catch me"?

In the city there's a 20 limit, and when I got to the end of the road there was a traffic officer with a speed camera, I was doing around 25. Decided to turn back and ask. To which he replied NO.

Just wondering, do they have to say yes or no? I'm not the type to drive past and be stressed about getting a letter through the door...

John.
The answer you get and the way it is answered all rather depends upon how the question is asked.

You seem to have been civil about it and got the answer without any problem.

The operator doesn't have to tell you but may of course do so...or they mey not.

If you ask a "smart-arse question" like this:

I once went past a Cumbria Van rather quickly on the A66. I did two u turns and went back to knock politly on the sliding door of the Van. Scammy answered and I asked if he'd nicked me to which he replied 'Its all automatic and he doesn't know who gets nicked or not. Its all on DVD'. I said to him, doesn't he have to form a prior opinion of speed and he smiled a sickly smile and closed the sliding door. I didn't get nicked.................... 78 on the GPS.
...and you may get an equally "smart-arse" response.

If you are a complete arse you will get an arsey reponse, like this:

i once pulled over into the layby one was in and gave the operator a mouth full for being on a straight bit of dual carriageway that had never seen an accident, asked what safety aspect was being enhanced by parking there. got a mumbled reply about just parking up where he was told to . i have no problems with them near schools, bad junctions etc,but sitting on dual carriageways regularly is taking the proverbial.
The operator would have been justified in responding in the same way as he was asked but policy will prevent that.

It is enirely up to the operator to decide what he tells you. If it was me I would simply ask why you wanted to know. Why? Because it always amused me to do so. smile

No problems with asking. The response rather depends upon you and of course the operator.

The operator knows full well why somebody would ask.Nothing amusing about it.

The operator also knows he's a pointless waste of space and is hated by everyone (apart from the mumsnet one percenters) so he's bound to be evasive.

I imagine he's also annoyed about only being able to get such a pointless job, maybe he wasn't smart enough to get the "watching cars taking a yard of buslane" camera inside in the warm.
