If they had said they wanted 50% I would not have employed them. I got three quotes for each job and all said pay at the end.

Did you update the initial builder? If so, how did he respond? Good luck with the remaining work.

Also my approach, 50% upfront would certainly not be entertained. In fact the most they will get up front is a coffee.
