Not a chance I would start a job without taking a deposit - 50% minimum!
Since moving in to my current home I have had new boiler and unvented system installed (£3300 and 3 days), a refitted bathroom (£4500 and 9days) then en-suite (£4300 and 7 days) all jobs paid at completion. This is what the tradespeople wanted and I of course was happy to pay this way.

If they had said they wanted 50% I would not have employed them. I got three quotes for each job and all said pay at the end.

I must have a trustworthy face;)

Did you update the initial builder? If so, how did he respond? Good luck with the remaining work.

Also my approach, 50% upfront would certainly not be entertained. In fact the most they will get up front is a coffee.
