Guys,

Moving house shortly which will mean a commute to work every day so I was thinking of turning to two wheels but I'm confused over what I can and can't ride and what tests I need to take. Every google answer seems to be different.

I applied for my Provisional licence back in 1990 and passed my car test in 1994. My paper licence shows category A in the provisional entitlements so can anyone put me right as to what I can ride etc?

Thanks in advance.

You can ride a Moped (50cc) with no 'L'-plates without further training or tests.

https://www.gov.uk/cbt-compulsory-basic-training/c...

However if you want to ride something more comfortable you'll need to do a CBT as a minimum, then you can ride a 125cc bike for two years before having to either repeat the CBT or pass a theory and practical test to gain A1 entitlement.

CBT is not a big deal, it'll take you about 4 hours and cost about a hundred quid.

Nearly, but not quite!

the classification of your A, A1, A2 license is dependant on the machine you take your test on.

16-17: CBT restricted to 31mph (50kph) 50cc machine.
17-18: maximum license A1: CBT + mod 1 + mod 2 = a1 license. on only a CBT, you're restricted to 125cc machine (no more than 17bhp).
19-20: maximum license A2: CBT + mod 1 + mod 2 = a2 license. limited to 50bhp (approx 250cc machine) but you must complete your test on a machine of this capacity. if you already have your A1, you don't need to complete a CBT prior to taking this test.
20+: A license: unrestricted capacity machine. must take your test on a 650cc machine.

basically, if you're under 21, take a CBT and use a 125cc machine. if you're over 21, take the DAS and ride anything you like.

the tests for a1,a2 and das will cost approximately the same to complete.

Seen as how the op asked what they 'can ride' I'm going to assume this means 'right now'.

The answer is: anything 50cc and WITH L-Plates as you will be classed as provisional/learner. You can do this for as long as you like with no tests or anything.

Your licence will show you as having 'A' category, but provisional.

As the other post above, if you want to ride a 125 you have to spend around £100 and a few hours doing a CBT.

I wouldn't bother with the 125cc/CBT every 2 years if I were you.

If your commute isn't too far and is mostly urban then I would just go for buying a 50cc scoot and just getting on with it whilst enjoying about 90mpg.

Or if you are 24 or older and want something bigger and more capable then just do your full Direct Access DAS test and get the full fat licence. It's a total breeze and only takes a few days. Then you can ride whatever you want without worry and can bin the embarrassing L plates.

I did my DAS and couldn't believe how quick and easy it was. Now I can just go out and buy whatever I fancy. Scary smile

A full car licence used to act as a full moped licence. When did the buggers change that?

Just want to confirm this for myself.
I'm currently 23 (haven't been for long so 24 is another year off unfortunately) and currently hold a UK Car license which i've had since 2010. I don't have my license with me at this moment so can't check my provisional entitlement just yet.

So currently I can ride a 50cc bike with L plates for as long as I want?
Being below 24 if I wanted to ride something more powerful i'd need to do a CBT, ride a 125cc for 2 years then go in for the DAS test?

is the age limit on the DAS test likely to change at all in the next year or so as I may be tempted to to wait until i'm 24, get the DAS done and then get something for commuting which is a bit bigger than 125cc

Good point.

The OP doesn't need L plates for a 50cc as I have just noticed he passed his test in 1994. If he passed after 2001 he would need L plates.

The regs are here:

5. CBT if you have a car driving licence
You can ride a moped without L plates and without taking the full motorcycle test if either:

you have a car driving licence and a compulsory basic training (CBT) certificate
you passed your driving test before 1 February 2001
You must complete a CBT course to confirm your full moped licence if you passed your car driving test on or after 1 February 2001.

Your CBT certificate for riding mopeds is then valid for as long as your car driving licence.
