I've been pulled over in exactly the same circumstance and got a telling off and sent on my way - sounds like the officer in question was having a bad day.

Usually cable tie my trade plates over the existing plate providing its screwed on

Here in the real world, where we move quite a number of cars per day from dealership to body repair and back again, it is almost impossible to attach a trade plate to a vehicle so that it won't swing about, scratch the paint, and possibly fall off.

Yes, you could 'gaffer tape' them on but that would require an arduous process to both apply and remove each time, wasting considerable time. Tape residue makes a mess and is time consuming to remove.

We just put them in the front and rear windows and haven't had a problem. It's quick, doesn't damage the car and they won't fall off.
Unfortunately, in a civilised society, because something takes a long time to do, that isn't sufficient reason to break the law.

Yes, I know it's tough, but that's the way it is.
You have never ran your own business/company have you?

If your business model involves you regularly operating outside the law then you'd be wise to allow/plan for getting captured a few times & the consequences of that capture.

Just to help with the planning, would you be kind enough to let me know how much the fine is for displaying a trade plate incorrectly is please.

I genuinely don't know.

Thanks

I used to live in rural East Anglia.
Don't get me started on tractors towing huge trailers containing 10 tonnes of sugar beet, in the dark, for mile after mile after mile of busy single carriageway A road at 20-25 mph, with no number plate, no lights on the trailer, and no intention to move over any time soon.
For some reason they seem to think that having a flashing yellow light on the tractor gives them the right to do anything they like while running on red diesel.

Who me ?

Lately on TV,we see officers explaining the points system for issue of tickets. Cynic in me asks if this ticket was issued in one of those areas, as officer had few/nil points in his bag for the day ideaidea

I would suggest that you update your plates . New types are available in magnetic flat plates , velcro straps etc.
Sounds just like laziness to me , bet the driver puts in more effort in future .

Bumper covers are plastic and a lot of body panels are now plastic or aluminium. Magnetic trade plates wouldn't be much use.

There is a whiff of "The dog ate my homework" about some of the excuses being touted as to why the plates aren't being displayed. Especially considering it's the motor trade where you'd consider them to be used to working with cars.

Not at all. Can you please explain a quick and easy way to correctly attach trade plates to a used vehicle for a ten minute journey.

Nope, you're right. I'm only going to drive my car ten minutes to Tesco tomorrow. I shan't bother to obey any inconvenient traffic rules either.

Actually, cool

I bought my boy an Aygo for his 17th and could find nowhere to stick the magnetic L Plates on it, apart from the bonnet. Nowhere on the rear at all. It was all plastic panels and glass.

I had to go an buy a second set of stick on plates.

Had to chuckle the other day as a yellow Aventador approached from the opposite direction and had to stop to let me through, on a reasonably wide road. Hadn't noticed before how wide they are.

Huge beasts. With no front number plate.

Reading the driver's mind...You ain't seen me, plod, right?

No, of course not, you blend really well into the traffic...hehe
