Good evening fellow pistonheaders

Just returned from a nice break in France, on my way down to Paris earlier this week I unfortunately fell into a radar trap. They put me down for 179kph which I believe is just shy of the 180kph limit where your car can be impounded.

Anyway I had to follow the officers to the station where I paid a 135 euro fine and had my licence (both parts) confiscated. I was advised I was not allowed to drive in France for 3 months- until I hear back from their magistrates court. Luckily my partner was in the car to drive the rest of the way.

They have advised me that I will recieve my licence back eventually but I need it now for other reasons.

What is the general concencous- apply for a replacement licence saying its lost/stolen? Do I need to declare this event to my insurance?

Thanks!!

Beware making false declarations to obtain a licence.

Based on a pal's very similar experience, you've seen the last of that particular copy of your licence so you'll need to decide what is necessary to obtain a replacement.

Sorry, not sure this is a true account. My tripling of the limit cost a LOT more than 135 euros.

What tripling of the limit?

179 in a 130 is nothing like triple.

I'm not wanting to make false declarations. If there was an option to state my position on the form I would!

Thank you for the replies.

Baring in mind what has been said amd Research suggests that I should just apply for a replacement.

I gather due to this being in France it holds no baring on our UK licence scheme, just concerned as I like to stay on the right side of the law!

It seems I was very lucky as the fine could have been up to 750 euros. Seemed I had a nice policeman!

Is this a regular occuarance? In all my years I have never had issues with the French Granada

I had assumed if he was a hair away from confiscation, it was in a lower limit. Mine was, and it was about the same speed. Les flics were very cross, which is mostly fair enough smile

that would be 205mph or 240mph if it was on the motorway
i think they still hang people in this country for those speeds

2 years ago I was travelling with a group of people 4 of whom had their licenses confiscated by French Police.....

All were sent back within a couple of weeks..

Based on my experience from a few years back you'll not see them again.

I applied for new ones as I'd misplaced the originals.
Simple.

Leaving aside the sheer practicalities (DVLA will reissue it) how does non reporting of this stuff to ones insurers work legally? They ask about convictions, bans, accidents etc. Surely you would need to tell them. Or am I missing something?

The offence was alleged (the OP has not been convicted) to have been committed in France.
There are no reciprocal agreements between France and the UK in terms of traffic offences (speeding etc), so the offence (alleged) has no enforcement in the UK. (Reciprocal Agreement is on it's way apparently).

So there's no need/obligation for the OP to inform his insurers.
