Factory fitted privacy glass tint level illegal

I'm not ranting, I had a business tinting windows along side fitting them for 7 years. We removed illegal tints on a weekly basis for customers who had been sold them as "well you can get away with XX%" tints. It is not true, you might get a blind eye or a cautionary word in your ear but it is still illegal.

If you pulled out in front of a bike and killed the rider how would your illegal tints allowable %age hold up in court?

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. I've already said (and emphasised for you) that anything under 70% VLT is illegal.

You are asking for proof about how these offences are dealt with and I would suggest it is already here in this post. The OP received a £50 NEFPN for 45% VLT exactly what the guidelines we work to state.

You say yourself above "in my experience you tend to get told to remove them and little more the 1st time unless it's silly dark" so in other words a warning for less severe tints, again exactly what I said happens.

Obviously if you have previously been warned and not done anything as a result you may face further action if stopped again.

Even this link which you posted to support you position does the opposite. It states:-

If your windscreen or front side windows are tinted too much you could get:

a ‘prohibition notice’ stopping you using your vehicle on the road until you have the extra tint removed
a penalty notice or court summons

i.e. you could be prosecuted for illegal tints, not you will be. The severity of the tint will influence what action, if any, will be taken.

To me it's exactly the same as doing 31 in a 30, you are breaking the law once you stray over that 30 barrier, weather or not you get prosecuted is up to the person dealing with you.

Ah and although you won't believe me because you know better. I know of a young MOT testers assistant who lost his license and job because he had a "light smoke you can get away with" on his front windows. He was pulled for speeding, 3 points and had darkened front windows, another 3 points. All within 6 months of him passing his test.

Same rules, visors count as windscreens.

However most coppers have the sense to know a tinted visor is like sunglasses & as long as you carry a clear spare it's no issue.

Umm, yes. The law IS black and white. 31mph is illegal. Whether that 31mph illegality is enforced is a different matter...

Thank you 2CVs that's what I have been saying all along. It is illegal and as such you are open to prosecution (not necessarily going to be just open). Some how things seem to have been twisted into me insisting you will be prosecuted without a doubt.

Incidentally to get a 50% total VLT you would have to apply a 70% film. In the trade I don't know of any one that stocks a film so light. I have had some as special order to tint a Mk1 Cortina glass as the customer wanted it for a show car. It was bare,y noticeable.

If you get caught doing 70-86 on a motorway you can get a speed awareness course, above 86 you're not eligible so looking at points and a fine, above 100 and magistrates guidelines recommend a ban. Looks like speeding is enforced in a very similar way to that described by cat for illegal tinted windows

Have a look at older heat reflective windscreens and see how much light they let in, they don't all let through 70%
