Have I read that right, do they recruit the police from sites now, no wonder they let so many people go, probably sold the cell bars for scrap.

Yeah they even employ black people in the police! Terrible isn't it... I've heard some forces even allow gays and muslims to apply...

How about you go away and think about these things you cretin. The police need to represent all sections of society... If someone from a traveller background can pass the checks and is good enough of course they should employ them.

If I posted the same hateful rubbish about black or asian people I'd be banned. I'd rather judge people individually on who they are... Rather than clumping people together! But hey I'm judging you... And your a muppet.

PC nonsense again!
The pub had problems with people at the travellers event last year and didn't want the same again this year so decided they wouldn't be allowed it. To bloody right, if it was my pub I would have done the same.

But you have no idea who the OP is yet you judge him on one sentence? Does that give you the high moral ground? I think not.

I would guess the only reason your posting left an impression is not one you would like to hear.

From the article:
"Another 10 claimants failed in their bid for compensation, because they were not among the group who originally tried to gain entry to the Coronet."

In a different thread recently it was suggested that the traveller community appears to be, and act as if they are, above the law in many/most cases. On that basis alone (and I have to say that in my knowledge and experience of them, this is true) it does appear to be an odd approach to admit them to the constabulary, and entirely unlike or unrelated to, say the black, gay or muslim community (as mentioned by poster #2). Employing travellers as police officers is more akin to giving a glutton the keys to the sweet shop, or any other similar simile.

The police have used the "bad apple" theory for years.

So just as not every policeman is a corrupt self serving tt, neither is every traveller a "bad apple"

I think paintman has probably nailed the reason for the applications, and bizarrely a few seemed to have met the paper requirements and passed. Travellers are not exactly known for their burning desire to give anything back to society, particularly where there are any laws involved, so as much as anyone might seek to defend them and/or their motives in this particular process, personally I will take an *awful* lot of convincing that they are doing this for any other reason than that they have identified a self-serving angle somehow.

It was a traveller conference, so maybe he was at the conference, but is not from the community itself?
We have traveller liaison officers who attend these events, they build up good communications with them.

That's certainly what I presumed when I read the article.

And you would have been faced with the same level of costs that JD Wetherspoon are now lumbered with. Good luck with that.

From the article it's not clear whether the Police Officer is of traveller/ gypsy/ romany descent , merely that he had attended the conference.

there is however, and typical for PH unfortunately, the usual undertones of racism in the thread.

equally some communities do not help themselves in such issues ... but demonisation from both sides of the coin is not the way to develop understandign and exeprience of different groups within services ... this has been played out with different ethnic/ racial / religious groups and different Jobs / trades/ professions many times over the last 30 or so years...
