Your car was resprayed over a year ago but the guy doing the spraying wanted an extra £600 that you refused to pay and gave him £1000 that was the original agreement.

Roll on a year and he sends you an E-mail demanding £1600 + VAT and then a few days later a letter arrives saying you own him £2700.Why has he contacted you now after a year.

It looks like the communication you have had has come from him so no courts or debt collectors involved.

I personally would ignore him but as you have a solicitor involved let then sort it out.

If everything you have said is correct it looks like there are other things that you have not told us.

Hi, I asure you that is the series of events. he did chase me for the extra money for a while but stuck to my guns and wasn't paying more than agreed.

The 'invoice' he's included doesn't even have my reg or mileage on so I'm guessing he's just made it up just for the debt people and can't remember it.

The questions are whether you agreed:

- beforehand to pay him for uncertain amount of time-and-materials (as opposed to for a certain fixed price), or

- afterwards to pay him for work additional to his original "estimate", and

- what were the circumstances of that agreement (in writing, oral with witness, oral without witness)?

If you can be bothered to read the whole thread your questions will be answered.

I was "bothered to read the whole thread" before I posted, thank you.

As often with forum threads, there were enough instances of incompleteness, inconsistency, and unclear use of language to make the matters that I raised appear to be ambiguous.

To put it another way: if those matters had been resolved when they might have been, this thread would not have required more than two or three posts.
