Is it possible for a main dealer to sell a 2nd hand car from his showroom without the V5 from the previous owner?

I'm not sure but suspect it is doable/legal - I however, wouldn't entertain it as any discrepancies later 'could' give you problems.

If you really want the car, I'd leave a deposit and wait for the V5 to arrive. Others may disagree, but the first thing I do before looking at a car is make sure all the paperwork (V5, service history, receipts, MOTs, HPI etc) is spot on and corresponds to the actual car - once turned down an MR2 as the VIN number on the V5 was 1 digit out when compared to the chassis...

Unless it's an ultra rare car, there are plenty out there! smile

Perfectly possible.

What was their reason for not having it?

Quite possible. The usual reason is cherished transfers taking an age to come back from DVLA.
