For all the 30mph you are a loon for doing 64mph posters this is a 40mph limit https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.05741,0.018387,3...

I have no idea about the OPs 30mph limit, and certainly I can think of many where 40mph would be highly inappropriate never mind 64mph, but the law has become a bit of an ass with regard to posted limits in the last few years.

But also vice-versa. In my locale, and around Surrey, I can think of quite a few 30mph roads used to be 40mph and faster; at night you could drive safely at 60mph. This of course isn't the same as driving at 64mph through a village. In any case, poor observation of speed limits is no defence.

Thats what I'm saying. Have a look at my link - I'd guess that road is dead straight 2 miles with no houses and its a 40 mph limit. If there was ever a hidden speed trap down there half the county would be getting the bus.

Unfortunately ignoring the unreasonably low speed limit while making good observations of the actual conditions is also not a defence frown

Don't see many repeater signs to confirm it is a 40 limit (other than the paint on the road surface)

Indeed. I've not heard of anyone being done but then why have it? I am a great believer in the the law governing with our consent and some posted limits are increasingly unjustified.

Regularly spaced painted Road roundels can be used in lieu of lollipop repeaters.

Speed limits appear very much to be an area that the masses do not appear to buy in to the law. I, like many others, am happy to admit that I frequently, if not usually, break the limits.

this isn't true for many other road laws. I can think of many occasions where it would have been safe to go through a red light - pedestrian crossing when you can the person crossed and no one else is in sight , but it wouldn't occur to be to it....

Which it has.

I don't think I knew that.

And after some checking, the painted roundels on the road can only be used in conjunction with upright signs.

Indeed, it's getting a bit silly we've had a spate of speed limit reductions: NSL to 50 then dropped again to 40 + 30 down to 20, people are in general just ignoring them if I flow with the traffic I'm breaking the law which really leads you to question the public support for these changes in many cases.

For possible reference I got caught in the exact same circumstances (and speeds) about 10 years ago but I didn't have any previous. Went to court and got 6 points and £400 fine.
