What would happen if you were smoking in the car with kids but the car was a convertible and you had the roof down???????????????
I imagine since a convertible was 'a car' you would get fined like anyone else.

It's OK introducing the law but just how are they going to enforce it? I see van and truck drivers every day smoking behind the wheel yet I can't find a single case where a driver has been done. I've even seen cops driving their vans and smoking at the same time!

No point in introducing a law that simply cannot be enforced. Easier to just ban the sale of cigarettes and tobacco. Full stop!

I would have thought it would be really easy to enforce? You just have to see someone smoking, stop them and fine them.

Easy as fining people for not wearing seatbelts, there's plenty of tickets get handed out for that.

A surprising amount of second hand smoke probably still circulates in the cabin so hopefully fined.

Seriously!?!?
Have you ever been in convertible with the roof down?

But your theory could explain why we see so many people in convertibles with the roof down wearing just a tee shirt in the depths of winter - they've simply put the heaters on full and are being gently wafted by all the warm air circulating in the cabin ..........?

Sooner it's banned anywhere outside the smoker's own home the better.
The same with booze?

Yes. I own a convertible. With a wind defector up, the warm toasty air stays in the cabin. I'm sure some smoke would be wafted away but I think it's easier from a legal perspective to just ban it in vehicles.

Can't speak for the IOM, but in the UK it would be even easier from a legal perspective if there were any police around to enforce it.

But there aren't the police numbers to enforce it, there's not likely to be in the foreseeable future (at least this side of the next GE), so you can have whatever law you like but it won't make any difference without a healthy dose of self-compliance.

What about fining parents for feeding their children too much fat and sugar.
Maybe also run them in for failure to control portion size.
Or if they let them spend too many hours in front of X Box or Sky.

Where will it stop.

Considering the amount of tax that smokers contribute, even after you remove the extra burden on the NHS, you may wish to reconsider that when your taxes go up.

Wouldn't shock me however, excessive persecution of smokers is one of the worst parts of living in the UK - even California seem to give smokers an easier ride than here, whereas the rest of the EU pretty much just lets smokers get on with it (full credit to Germany especially for that).

Don;t have an issue with not smoking in the car if kids are present, mainly as I don't have kids so this really doesn't affect me. Banning smoking when I am on my own in the car though? Oh do fk off.

I dont hear about many incidents of violence due to excessive smoking.
I dont hear many incidents of crashing while smoking.
I dont see many incidents of vandalism due to smoking.
How many families have broken up due to the father/mothers addiction to fags?

probably has something to do with the burden on the nhs.

I never understood why they banned smoking in work vehicles as I see it everyday and police dont seem to want to enforce it, also why is illegal to smoke next to my colleague in the car but not a baby? I assume because the baby isnt there through the course of work.
