I've not got the full details, so from what I gather:

The judge said she wasn't technically minded on the matter, so as a result couldn't decide who was to blame without each party offering a independent expert. This would take time and cost a lot of money. So she suggested they go to a room and sort it out themselves.

They agreed on £700, my mate happier then the other guy.

I'll get the full story Wednesday

Sounds like your mate got a very undeserved lucky result.

How so? It only would have cost him about £450 to fix if he had the opportunity to do so.

He wasn't given that opportunity though, which is the point. Why did your mate take it straight to another dealer instead of contacting the original one?

You're confused Centurion, his mate is the dealer not the buyer. I think his mate was stuffed unfairly.

Doh. redface

That'll teach me to skim-read.

In which case I feel your mate has been hard done by with the £700, but as long he's ok with it. smile

Lose Lose (win) result.
Dealer pays out maximum it would have cost him, and buyer still thinks he's a crook.
Buyer out of pocket for difference between settlement figure and total cost to fix. Plus he has to continue in life being a tit.
Happy main dealer who will probably get to skim the idiot buyer for several more things in the near future.
