Maybe he meant one of the boxes where postmen store letters and parcels they are going to deliver that day?
That's what I thought.

So how did it get signed for?
That was my entire point; if RM stated the item was stolen prior to delivery and yet they managed to produce a delivery signature then their story has more holes than an late 90's Mercedes.

You can still sign for a damaged, empty pacrcel.

It get delivered, you sign for it, get it the house/shop, open it up and its empty.

True.
My girlfriend signed for this recently....

....while it was being held in a position to hide the damage by the delivery guy.

Thankfully nothing had dropped out but it could have been different and I think he would still have delivered it even if some parts had as he wouldn't know either way.

Royal Mail investigations have turned up nothing. I have received a cheque in compensation from the watchmaker which is very nice, but nothing can compensate for the loss of an heirloom frownfrown

I'm sorry to learn that.

Did Royal Mail track and trace show the steps the package containing the watches took en route to the watch repairer? Did Royal Mail show that the package got to the watch repairer?

Yes. The package made it safely to Edinburgh Mail Centre. From that point on things get confusing. A second tracking number was allocated at Edinburgh. Both numbers got to Alloa Delivery Office. The second number was that which was received damaged. The original number is still shown as "out for delivery" - after 2 months!

Worth a call around pawnbrokers in the Edinburgh area?
