Driving earlier going over speed limit, see policeman with laser gun in distance but Im turning off before reaching him. I knew I was over the limit, so decided to drive back around to him to see if I had been caught, would save a two week wait.
Turns out I had been caught, but he was pleased that I'd come around to him and put my hands up owning up to my mistake, he let's me off with a warning smile was at court speed as well so I'm glad he used his discretion as the speed itself wasn't actually dangerous. Newfound respect and I won't be speeding for a longtime.

Yeah I understand why he's posting that, but I'm glad the policeman decided to use his discretion rather than give me a day in court.

All that jazz

I wonder if you'll be saying this when the FPN/summons drops through the letterbox in the next few days. hehe

Was that all the equipment he had - just a laser gun?

I've had discretion used both times I've been caught. Both were court appearance speeds (97 in a 70 and 78 in a 50) but written up as just fixed penalties. On both occasions not denying it and being friendly seemed to work well, I was even complimented for spotting him the first time as he said I was already braking when he clocked me.

I think he might have been having you on.

I assumed it was just left on the car, he was about 20 metres from it.

What speeds (your's and the limit) were involved?

It's a bit odd that he would position himself such that you could see him and turn off before you got to him.

Bearing in mind HH guns aren't reliable over much distance I think he might have been kidding you in terms of letting you off.

If you answer this, the thread will most likely go only one way OP...

If there's a possibility that I might have been clocked exceeding the limit, and a small chance that my registration has not been identified, I will not be 'going round again' to check whether I have been properly caught or not. Just saying.

I deliberately didn't put this in the post as I know what the comments would be.

Police discretion can work very well.
