Car Sold privately - Car now Broken
Discussion
I'm guessing the cost of these "repairs" are more than the car was worth? Just take the advice of the other posters on here, it was his responsibility to inspect the car and there is no warranty or recourse to a private sale unless deliberatly mis-advertised e.g. you said it had a new engine and it was on the original one. If you never said any of these components were in perfect order it's entirely his problem.
Definitely worth taking your own advice in future OP, by issuing identical seller and buyer sales documents with 'bought as seen, no warranty or guarantee given or implied' and put the time as well as the date on it when the deal is done so that any speeding or parking problems that may come your way before the new registration document is issued can be sorted.
There's a lot of it about.

Happens all the time. Either he's trying to scam a few quid back or he's just stupid and doesn't know the first thing about what to look for when buying a car.
Remember on here someone that sold an A3 a while back for about £3 or 4k and the buyer came back with about £3k of work that needed done.
I believe he was politely told to Go and F himself.

I had the car two and half years with it never showing any signs of breaking down or causing problems for me, my reason for sale was moving onto a faster car and nothing to do with the car being bad, it was a good car. I would say that he has either over revved the car causing it to drop a valve and is trying to find anything wrong with it or even making them up to help pay his bill of £1700 or there is nothing wrong with the car and he's just trying it on.

Unless you get court papers through your door (you won't) ignore all communication.

I always thought this was the case as well but there's been two people sent court papers through their door on MSE forums.Tim
One folded (silly) and paid a proportion of the costs.
The other the judge seems to be entertaining it and has asked both parties to pay for an independent evaluation of the vehicle's condition.

I got a judgement in my favour (this was in the eighties) at small claims court. I bought a car with a gearbox that fell to bits within a week. I did a little investigation (yeah I know I should have done it before but I was young) and found he was actually an illegal trader. Court ruled in my favour. I never got the money. One folded (silly) and paid a proportion of the costs.

I'm going to wager that there is no £1700 bill and that he's just trying to get cash out of you.Ignore all communucations.

That was because he was a trader though. There's very different rules for a private sale.
In most normal situations, a court will not entertain it. There must be something specific and actionable in the claim.
An example would be misrepresentation, if you can prove it.
Totally agree - but we don't know if there's an element of that in the recent cases cited. I agree OP has no case to answer and the buyer will have to sort out any problems that really exist for himself. In most normal situations, a court will not entertain it. Did he also mention that the quantum hairspring was loose, or the carb nodule was clogged? They can be a bit pricey you know, especially if it needs a sequentially distributing butterfly valve
This brings nothing of value to the thread. In other news... 2 pages in and still no idea what make or model the car is!!?? This is still PistomHeads, isn't it?

Didn't think it mattered as to what car it is. It is a Clio 182 as you can see from my only other thread. In other news... 2 pages in and still no idea what make or model the car is!!?? This is still PistomHeads, isn't it?
