OP,

As others have said this is a fairly well known scam these days.

If you do a search there are a bunch of other threads where this has happened.

Cambelt slipping lol

Indeed.
Presumably he meant the cam belt had slipped as in jumped a tooth or two thus leading to valve and piston interference. Maybe he over revved it by selecting a wrong gear. 4th to 3rd rather than 5th whilst accelerating hard for example.

I was trying to illustrate, using humour, that he could be talking complete bolcensoredocks.

I know the usual responses but I bought a Zr 160 a while back and the engine blew on the drive home, I got money back from the bloke selling it.

My friend paid top cash for a Impreza STI the other day and the engine borked the very next day, does he have any recourse at all? The bloke he bought it off mentioned being a trader, but if he isn't a trader is there any comeback?

Well we're all good then! On a related note, I once sold an immaculate Renault 5 GT Turbo Raider to a very nice chap and a couple of days later he told me that the gearbox exploded. He was thoroughly charming about it and said something to the effect of "oh well not to worry, that's life isn't it?"

I once bought a Nissan 200sx that I wasn't allowed to drive on the test drive, but was driven in it, all seemed fine but when I was on the motorway heading back I noticed the clutch was slipping a lot when stabbing the throttle in 5th gear. Such is life, I cursed the seller (in the same manner as the old woman in Drag Me To Hell) and fitted a nice new clutch.

Did he also mention that the quantum hairspring was loose, or the carb nodule was clogged? They can be a bit pricey you know, especially if it needs a sequentially distributing butterfly valve yes
This brings nothing of value to the thread.
yes it does - its adds to the smile and interest factor of your post. Seeing that your not a frequent flyer of Pistonheads then perhaps you dont know that, but then again if you were you would have know the answer to your question in the first place as its a common one.

Unless you get court papers through your door (you won't) ignore all communication.

Tim
I always thought this was the case as well but there's been two people sent court papers through their door on MSE forums.
One folded (silly) and paid a proportion of the costs.
The other the judge seems to be entertaining it and has asked both parties to pay for an independent evaluation of the vehicle's condition.
For the buyer, bearing in mind it costs so little, and if the seller looks like he has a few bob, then it's got to be worth a punt in the small claims court.

The seller might fold beforehand, but even of it gets to court you'd be bonkers to bet on the outcome - the decisions sometimes appear very random.

I got a text from the guy I sold my last car to:-

"not even halfway home - engine light on"

to which the reply was

"Sorry to hear about the problem you are experiencing with your car"

He text back a day or so later

"took it to mechanic who cleared all faults, fault hasnt returned"

Which was nice.

I sold my old Omega on Ebay. I pointed out in the ad that it had a water leak from around the water pump and it was making some peculiar noises from that area so buyer should consider that it may give out any time when buying.

Nice Polish bloke turned up , paid cash. A few minutes later I get a call. 'Its broken' . As they were only a couple of miles away and being a nice chap I popped out to have a look and turns out the water pump had finally let go and he'd stopped twice to fill up with water before it seized. Silly boy. So nothing I could do apart from lend him my mobile to call a recovery truck. He didnt bat an eyelid, totally understood the concept of 'buyer beware' and was laughing about it with his mate.
