A crate of wine was delivered to my house incorrectly about a month or so ago. It was left out the front with nothing through the door so I only discovered it after who knows how many days sat outside. It was for the previous house owner who moved out over 2 years ago. I contacted the sellers and they arranged, eventually, to pick it up. They have yet to do so and claim its because I've not been in. (Err yes, I work you know) I've just got off the the phone to them now. They are keen to get their wine back so I suggested I leave it where they delivered it. The front garden. They say that if it went missing they could chase me for the cost of the wine. So we agreed that they will pick it up on Saturday (Still a good chance I won't be in but not really my problem). I've had this wine in my house sitting there for over a month and I'm a little fed up with the company mentality especially the threat of charging me if the wine goes missing. Could they do this? Half tempted to charge them storage costs for keeping them in the house all this time.
A friend of mine has been getting a case ow wine delivered every 6 months from a well know mail order company who when contacted denied delivering any, this has been going on for over 4 years, they also get an extra box of sparkling stuff at christmas, for the first few times they contacted the company, getting the oh no we haven't ever delivered to you, now they just drink it.
My recommendation is to tell that where you will leave it for collection and confirm that in writing. Sit back and wait for it not to be collected. then just drink it.

They had probably written the wine off until you got in touch with them and now know that the wine is in your possession so can bill you if it now goes missing again.
If you have arranged for it to be picked up on a day convenient day for you, why would you be an arse and happen to be out when they are coming to pick the wine up when you want?
Basically if you had said nothing you could of had a free case of wine as there is no receipt of delivery. You should have just enjoyed the wine and stayed quiet.
Also it may be worth contacting the previous home owner if you have their address and tell them to change their delivery address with the wine company.

I'm not going to be an arse and go out just to spite them. I just don't know my Saturday plans. If you have arranged for it to be picked up on a day convenient day for you, why would you be an arse and happen to be out when they are coming to pick the wine up when you want?

Tell them they will be placed outside your door on X day and they can collect them. If they fail to collect on that day you will thereafter charge them storage at the rate of £10 per day.If you arrange for them to collect the parcel on Saturday, then any other plans you make for the day should revolve around that. Yes its inconvenient to you, but that doesn't mean you have a right to waste their time and money sending a courier on the agreed day.
However, if you haven't yet arranged a specific Saturday, I would specify the time. I.E they must pick up between 9am and 11am. This means you can make other plans with ease.
Alternatively, you can offer them a token amount for the crate, and sell/give to your friends and family.

I would partially agree with thisHowever, if you haven't yet arranged a specific Saturday, I would specify the time. I.E they must pick up between 9am and 11am. This means you can make other plans with ease.

Partially in so much as I would make no effort to be in at a specific time but if I was I would open the door and deal with their courier, with the assumption that I am in most of the time on Saturdays but do have weekend stuff which takes me out of the house from time to time
Having said that some, but not all, couriers will give 1-2h time windows so I would possibly say I will definitely be in from 10-12 so find a courier to collect then
This is not your problem, I would personally be helpful but not at the expense of wasting my own precious time
Naturally you have now acknowledged that you have the wine, Im sure a lesser person would have kept quiet if they had found it without signing
Christ, you really are a charmer.
However, I'm with the op on this.
Why should he wait around all day for them to collect when've in fact has done them a favour?
No doubt they will using the cheapest courier they can find to do the collection which might not allow them to bedtime specific.

Some idiot shoved one of those Betterware catalogues through my door once and then came and asked for it back a few days later. He reckoned I owed him a quid because it went in the bin. What a wker.
Those Betterware catalogues are a real pain as they expect you to leave them outside, which means that everyone passing by knows you are not at home.
I have not had any recently, but I never used to leave them outside and they always ended up in the bin.
