"One thing that hasn’t changed much is the ride quality: this M5 still rides magnificently, and it’s such a quiet, comfortable, smooth thing to cruise about in that it’s incredibly easy to sneak up past 90mph without even realising it"
In all fairness I don't think you can sneak up to 120 without realising it. Even if the car is like a magic carpet, the outside world will be flying past at an alarming rate.

Many moons ago, early one Sunday morning, I managed to reach a stupid speed (well above 120) in a Toyota Supra Turbo on the motorway. All was going swimmingly until I encountered some countdown signs for roadworks ahead.....roadworks in 600 yards, 400, 200, and bang, a whole load of cones, almost before I'd had time to process the first sign.

Breaking firmly from those speeds is an experience, nothing much seems to happen and you're breaking for an age and still doing over the ton. Scared the living wits out of me. I'm not sure I've been into treble figures on a public road since, and that was about 25 years ago.
You do have quite a talent for exaggeration.

Even at 1/2 braking, you can brake from 140 down to 100 in around 200 metres, and 100 to 50 will take you another 160 metres or so.

Unless of course your Supra suffered from serious brake fade

I'm surprised you could even read the post you're quoting from all the way up there on that horse. rolleyes

Better than a Beemer, not as mental as a Lambo, and less sensible than a Porker.

And I bet that for the OP it's a relief not to have it hanging over his head any more.
Absolutely, the afternoon after I'd appeared in court I felt a real weight off. The worry leading up to the hearing is very much worse than the punishment, assuming it's not worse than you thought the worst could be, if that makes sense.

Ha, you can drift off to 120mph , and not know it! I've heard that plane pilots, high in the sky, can end up with one wing tip 20ft higher than the other unless they keep a watch on the artificial horizon!! Beat that.

On what type of plane? On a large commercial liner, that's only a banking angle of a few degrees.

Was that not the point?

Not really, 20ft makes it sound very dramatic, when in fact it isn't on a large aircraft. I don't see how that's the same as exceeding the speed limit by 50mph and not realising it.

I presume, in hindsight, you could have carried on insuring it and had a better deal?

If any use I got done speeding on the motorway At 115 and got a fine of £600 and no ban but paid the solisitor £500 as well. This is the time for you to look and be sorry for those above.

I posted it because it because it was completely irrelevant to the original post, like 99% of the subsequent posts here !!! So I thought it would be appropriate !!

Ah! Gotcha. Was funny watching and listening while I was waiting. Seems Court is an everyday thing for some people, they're not bothered a bit and I was bricking it!!

I try to avoid the M6, but always useful know.

Very reassuring to hear plod is out there, protecting us from Armageddon.

It does seem more than a bit strange that the police service says it can't cope with funding cuts, yet manages to run unmarked traffic cars on motorways in the dead of night.

Edited by mybrainhurts on Monday 29th June 19:50
If you were Plod would you rather not be sitting cosy & warm safe & sound bumbling up and down a motorway, taking breaks for a burger & coffee as opposed to getting cold, risking life & limb tracking down drug dealers, armed robbers & the gangs that have made much of our cities & towns no-go area?

That is what I wanted but they would not allow it. I would have thought that I could have carried on with some form of Insurance as the car could have been stolen, and you have to have Insurance if you are not going to SORN the car.

a nice quiet stretch of motorway at 1am on a Sunday night I got nicked doing just over 120mph...... 56 day ban

Yes, fantastic outcome! rolleyes
Actually, that's a brilliant outcome. 120+ on an empty motorway, to only get a 56 day ban...

My hairdresser's bloke got tugged at 117mph. 3 year ban! eek

He did already have points though but still, 3 fking years???

Somehow, I think there might be a bit more to it than that.

This didn't happen, or if it did then not for speeding. 2nd drink drive offence within 10 years has a mandatory minimum 3 year ban. If someone tells me they once had a three year ban then I'd immediately think repeat drink driver.

Apart from totting up cases, the longest ban I've ever had for speeding is 3 months - for an agreed 142 mph.
