I think a simple test in such cases would be to reverse the situation and ask

If the person died penniless and didn't even have enough left over for a decent funeral would you be chucking a few quid in to help cover the costs.

You can probably work the rest out.

50% church
50% local hospice

At least the neighbour ddidnt get anything which closes the issue for me
