wasn't sure if I should put this in here, but as I had a chat with a very pleasant lady from Essex Police yesterday (yes i take it all back).

Had a little accident yesterday afternoon, the gap I thought was big enough for 2 cars to get through wasn't quite big enough and I now have a taped up door mirror, the lady in the other car also has a broken door mirror. My fault I got it wrong and shouldn't have tried to pass the parked car.

As we were both travelling, her much faster than me as I was about to turn left into my doctors, I just carried on into the doctors car park and parked up (all of about 30 yards) tried to put the mirror back into the clips on my car, I didn't notice the lady in the q7 come into the car park.

Anyway, she was obviously shaken up, and I was annoyed (at myself for a stupid move), words were exchanged, and I was called rude (all i said was that it wasn't a big deal, insurance would cover it, i thought she was going a bit fast and there was room, obviously wasn't but the adrenaline was flowing, and I didn't want to admit to myself i'd been a prune).

Anyway, this is the odd bit, she said it will cost me to fix it, i said of course it won't you'll claim on my insurance.

so i went over to my car as she looked like she was going to take a picture of my reg number etc, so i looked for a pen and paper to exchange details, took me maybe a minute to find the pen at the bottom of the cubby box in the car, i turned round and she had gone. she hadn't said anything, just got into her car and gone, i didn't even hear her go. i had suggested she move her car as it was on the yellow hatching in the do not block part of the doctors, but she had gone completely.

so i phoned 101 and they said go into the local station and report it.

so i popped i last night as soon as i could and spoke to the PC on the reception desk, she said it was pointless taking the report as I had no details of the other driver or car. I was going to write it all down when I got the pen and paper.

I said I wanted to come in in case the other driver had said i had left the scene / failed to give details, PC said no I was parking safely as far as she was concerned, and she was happy that I was going to give details, mainly as I'd gone into the station etc. So she said not to worry about the report but gave me her name and number and would happily say I had complied. She also said my attitude wasn't an issue as far as she was concerned.

So i'm now going to phone my insurance company and let them know a claim may come in against me (i won't be claiming, parts are fairly cheap for an old land rover) but I still have no details to give as the other driver didn't wait to exchange them.

i take it that her insurance company would be able to trace mine by the reg number from a photo? i'll have to take any premium hike on the chin, i was the guilty party, i just don't understand why she wouldn't wait for the insurance details from me?

sorry if it's just a cool starry bra post, i've only had 2 my fault accidents in 30 years of driving (this is the 2nd) and only 3 in all. both of the others went the normal way of exchanging and being fixed.

I'd personally not say anything to my insurer unless they contacted me to tell me a claim had been made.

I've read many stories on here of people doing what you plan on doing and ending up having their premiums hiked despite no claim being forthcoming.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly to let me know whether this is duff advice or not!

i did wonder, but i am out of the country for a few weeks starting in a weeks time, so i didn't want to come back to a st storm to be honest.

i know it will cost me, the lady at admiral did say if a claim is made that i will lose 2 years NCB, and in fact she can see i haven't had a claim for 15yrs.

i'll just have to see what happens. paying more i expected as i drove into the car park. for the other party to just go i wasn't smile

Q7 driver seemed keen to leave

Maybe not in a position to claim

Driving car she's not insured on/somewhere she doesn't want others to know where she is etc etc

Heads up to the insurance co and wait and see I guess

Do you not protect your NCB then?

I wouldn't worry too much, see if anything happens.

Could this have taken place at a time of day when maybe she had the odd glass of wine

My OH had a similar incident a few years ago. She tapped the back of a fairly new Mini driven by a 17 year old girl. There was a bit of damage to the Mini so they swapped details but we never heard anything. I suspect that the Mini driver may not have been insured; she was 17 and it was her Mum's car.

well it was about 3:45 yesterday afternoon, but having known someone that died due to health problems caused by drinking, that's not a big indicator.

my friend, had been known to turn up to pick the kids up from school drunk (thankfully walking / staggering). never smelt anything, but tried not to get too close.

While I would probably go down this route if I was confident she wasn't going to claim, this may not be the best advice.

If her insurance do get in touch with the OP's, they are going to want to know why he didn't report it and it could cause some problems in the long run. I believe LoonR1 is an insurance guy, might be worth waiting to see his thoughts.

I'm pretty sure her insurance company can get your details through your number plate. She probably took a photo and decided to walk as she didn't like your attitude (your comment, not mine. I'm sure it wasn't that bad).

All you can do is wait and see.

She may have been upset and just decide to leave after she had your reg. number.

You're right to inform your insurance company just in case she decides to claim.

Was she a piekey? they love Q7's, in which case she would not be properly insured although the car would have some cover under someones name.

Do you have to report all accidents even those that are going to go 50/50 and no one actually benefits but the insurance company who loads the premiums for the next X years?

fully agree, insurance company has been informed, and they just said wait and see.

as for my attitude (even my wife said i could have been a bit more compassionate when i told her, what does she know smile), yes i suspect she may have, considering the way she kept on and on etc about her right of way (yes it was, i thought there was enough room, i was wrong) but i think perhaps i wasn't bowing and scraping enough, who knows.

in fact thinking back she never once asked about insurance, just kept ranting about it costing her money. well insurance is there for a reason, i'm now going to have to cough up because i was in a hurry and stupid.

Unfortunately, I think you do.

My OH had a no-fault collision in a car park at her work last year. The girl that hit her admitted full liability and asked to keep the insurance company out of it. I still suggested to the OH that she notify her insurance company, just in case the girl decided to report it to her insurance and blame my OH.

The only time I wouldn't report an accident would be if I was the soul party involved and I was going to fix the damage myself i.e. I lost it on a corner and scraped the car against a tree.

If you don't report a no-fault accident, what happens if the other party does and says you were to blame? It looks very suspect when they report it and you don't.

It is bks though, insurance companies jacking their prices up even if it doesn't end in a claim. It's also ridiculous when your insurance goes up as the party not at fault.

Somebody needs to sort the insurance companies out, as they are start to run amok...

It's one of those mate; everybody makes mistakes and sometimes you just get it wrong.

With regards to attitude; emotions always run high when things like that happen. People are precious about their cars and hate dealing with insurance etc, she probably knows her insurance will go up even though she wasn't at fault. You just need to let people vent.

You've reported it, that is the main thing. Now you'll just have to sit back and see if she puts a claim in.

the accident happened on the road outside the doctors and i was signalling to pull in when it happened.

i don't think they have cameras there as they have houses and a primary school all around, could be worth asking if they have anything to at least get her number.

thanks
