This is a strange thread. The manufacturer, with no argument, has accepted they are at fault and offered to repair the ring FOC. This is excellent customer service so what are you complaining about? I think the reality is you and your fiancée have realised £1500 is a lot to spend on a ring and have a bit of buyer's remorse.

It's also not unusual to refuse refunds on personalised items as they are very difficult to re-sell. There's a reason they don't make them in the size you wanted.

It's a difficult one, strictly speaking you're 100% correct that the manufacturer has opportunity to offer to repair the item, and if it were a washing machine or a carpet I expect it wouldn't be an issue.

But an engagement ring is not really something you can be flippant about mending, there's an emotional needs aspect that people will bring to the transaction that the retailer should anticipate. They should at the very least be offering credit and maybe discount on another design.

If they're standing firm and you've got photos I'd be hitting the social media with their fally-aparty rings and see what their reaction is to that.

This is the downside of social media, unreasonable people use it to discredit perfectly reasonable practices and shame companies into action. This company appears to be doing a good job and you want to bash them on twitter. How are they being flippant?

The OP's actions are clearly coloured by the fact that they don't want any ring, never mind this one. They just want their £1500 back.

They are correct. You now have a custom altered item which they cannot resell.

They have the legal right to have the opportunity to repair the ring. That's also pretty reasonable considering that it's a pretty delicate, expensive item that is worn every day.

I'd be pretty certain that now this has happened, they will be checking the seating of the rest of the stones. The same thing happened to my wife's ring. It's one of those things where you have to move on.

I know the stereotypical chest-hair laden man of the previous generation would give his wife a slap to break his woman's hysteria and fix her a scotch.

Nowadays, one must look to more modern ways of reducing the emotions of one's wife. Otherwise, good luck planning a wedding. And buying a house - both of those things will be ten times worse, and neither will run right!

Thread resurrection!

Another stone has fallen out. I agree with most of the comments so far. I think it's one of them items that has a large emotional element attached to it. The ring is modified, but not in a way that effects the stone settings. I appreciate it will be harder for them to resell or they will have to re-work the ring again if they accepted a return etc. Anyway, they've had their chance to fix this now - time for refund on the ring?

Good luck.

You could write to them outlining the facts, asking them for a position for what they propose for repair, and liability for the loss of further stones, and how they feel that relates to their responsibility under the SOGA.

With a bit of luck they'll commit to something in response.

What if I hadn't bought the warranty though and what happens when that warranty runs out? Essentially I have to accept that this ring will loose a stone every 3-4 months?

wait the five years then get your Mrs up the duff, her fingers will swell, repeat for say four kids and then worry about the ring in abo ten years time.

seriously just take it back and get it sorted and tell the Mrs to stop moaning
