just received this from the police.. infuriating.

Wow. What an incredibly lazy response. Unsigned from the 'Crime Prevention Unit'

I'd reply something like this,

Thank you for your generic reply. I have identified a suspect for mail theft. I have witnessed him attempting to steal mail from my letterbox. I have a number of photographs of the person of interest, one of which is of high quality. I have recorded the registration number of the vehicle which the suspect uses. This suspect is persistently attending my address at semi regular times to collect mail, he has a key to open the mail boxes.

I am willing to supply you with the information I have obtained as well as a statement if required for if/when a prosecution takes place.

I do understand that the police are understaffed and resources are stretched, but I have identified a suspect and a vehicle and have times that he attends my location.

Can you please allocate this to an officer for investigation.

anything like http://shop.smartwater.com/household.html smartwater useful, put some dummy decoy letters marked with this stuff, he touches them and he gets covered.

Hmmm but actually catching him with the smartwater on him and the letters, this proof things is a little tricky...

perhaps have dummy letters in your mailbox with the wanted posters inside so he reads them

or dummy letters with a spoof police letter stating that they will be conducting round the clock surveillance and will be in contact soon.

all a bit lame I'm afraid...

can you ask to have the postboxes moved inside, assuming you have a secure door and communal area. As multiple people are affected you might better sway with the management company.

Its not catching the thief but making your letterboxes less attractive.

regarding the mailboxes - this is all in hand. I'm not sure what we will end up with, but at the very least they will be much more secure than what we have just now. The property management company were out today to see what their options would be.

I have responded to the empathetic letter i got from the police with all of the detail that i have..

i was genuinely considering it - as well as putting the pictures in the letter box, but i am ultimately trying to get this guy caught and not just have him disappear for a while. My neighbours have been telling me that this has been going on (on and off) for the last two years.. and i'm inclined to believe it's the same guy each time.

If it's been going on that long with the same crook - i'd bet he's got multiple fake id's or fraud capers being run from those addresses. He won't be pleased with you if he realises it's you stopping his gravy train. Be careful.

Awkward PJFamilyguy1, read the thread next time, to summarise, thief, stealing, OP's post, from OP's Mailbox.

This reply annoys and saddens me. Crime must not pay, simple ! We need to lock these people up and like in other countries make their families pay for it.Harsh treatment and harsh rules is the only way IMHO.

Speak to the Post Office and get your mail sent to a friends address for a month or so.
